The Black Boot charity fundraiser for cancer patients on the Sunshine Coast is back for a second year at the Sechelt Legion on Nov. 19, with proceeds going to the Ruby Slipper Fund.

Last year was a big success, according to co-organizers Craig Moore, Nancy Palmer and Sandy Lanskail. The event raised about $8,000 and this year they are aiming for $10,000.

“Last year was a sell-out event,” Palmer said. “We’re expecting a larger crowd this year because everyone had such a good time last year.”

New this year, the SoTight Band will be playing in the dance hall while the Blue Line Trio – who performed last year – plays on the side. Also, a second bar will be open to get the drinks out a little faster.

“Last year the only complaint I heard from people was that they weren’t getting their liquor quick enough,” Moore said. “So we’re going to have two bars this year, just to serve everybody a bit quicker.”

Moore said the philosophy behind the event is to make the lives of cancer patients a little easier while they cope with their diagnoses.

“Once you’ve been diagnosed, your life changes,” Moore said. “I know there are people in this community who are suffering and they don’t have a disability plan, so they’re dealing with it on their own.”

Smitty’s Oyster House is providing an oyster bar and Greg Petula will be doing the food preparation. A shuttle van will be provided for those who need help getting home.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Moorestock (formerly Lucy’s), the Daily Roast, Remax Oceanview Realty, Roberts Creek General Store and Sita’s Spag and Suds.
