A vessel that capsized in Porpoise Bay in early August has been removed from the water under authority of the Coast Guard.
Residents near Kontiki Road noticed the capsized 24-foot fibreglass boat named Bald Eagle on Aug. 3, still attached to a can buoy but in “very bad shape.”
Following an inspection by the Coast Guard, it was deemed a risk to navigation and a communications officer for the agency said “immediate measures” would be taken if the hazard increases.
On Sept 1, the Coast Guard confirmed with Coast Reporter the vessel was removed two weeks ago “under Coast Guard’s authority granted by the Wrecked, Abandoned, Hazardous Vessels Act.”
“Notification has been posted giving the owner 30 days to come forward, and Coast Guard continues to work to locate the owner,” said Kiri Westnedge, communications advisor with the agency.
If the owner doesn’t come forward, the vessel will be deconstructed.
