Affordable housing event set

SSC Properties

The public is invited to bring their affordable housing questions and suggestions to an event SSC Properties is hosting that will unveil the plans they have been pitched for cost-efficient housing designs to date.

The Dec. 8 event will also feature affordable housing plans of the Sunshine Coast Housing Society and the District of Sechelt, in an effort to generate discussion and help SSC nail down a doable affordable housing solution on site.

SSC Properties has 170 hectares of land it plans to develop just north of Porpoise Bay Provincial Park, and one of the first phases of development calls for some sort of cost-efficient housing plan.

“We’re committed to doing this really early in our program because the need is out there,” said Werner Hofstatter of SSC.

The company put out a request for expressions of interest in September, asking for cost-efficient housing plans that took into consideration innovative pocket neighbourhood designs.

Hofstatter said SSC received “five really good” proposals and he plans to show the best of those five to the public on Dec. 8 to get their feedback.

“We want to put our suggestions based on our request for expressions of interest on the table and bundle it with all of those other great ideas and actually show people that we can do things now to address this rather than wait for some magic solution down the road,” Hofstatter said.

He invites anyone interested in affordable housing to come to the Dec. 8 meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. at the shíshálh Nation hall, behind McDonald’s.

Guests are asked to let SSC know they plan to attend by emailing [email protected] or calling 604-639-6888.
