Driftwood Players is excited to announce the official opening of the Driftwood Theatre School, with acting classes for youths aged 11 to 19 beginning next week.

The dynamic team of international instructors, Sally Williams, Ingrid Bilton, Richard Austin and Melina Cassidy, are familiar faces on the local theatre scene. Each brings their own unique background in theatre and teaching, combining extensive experience in both classical and modern, European and North American theatre and film with unparalleled enthusiasm for nurturing young talent on the Coast.

"This unique blend will not only give our students a well rounded experience of theatre; it will also give them a taste of the international flavours of acting and stagecraft," said Cassidy, the Driftwood Theatre School founder, who started a thriving youth theatre school in the Middle East.

The Driftwood Theatre School believes in building core strengths in creative expression and will teach voice, movement, scene study, characterization, improv and performance skills - all areas that will benefit young people in terms of confidence, expression, teamwork and creativity.

"More than anything, I believe in the transformative power of drama education in the life of a child," added Bilton, school founder/instructor. "What subject is better suited to explore the human condition, to promote compassion, and to foster mental discipline?"

Williams concurs: "My essential goal is to foster a real curiosity about what it is that makes provocative, joyful theatre for the remarkable times in which we live," she said. "All persons harbour riches deep within and it's the instructor's task to unleash those riches and strengths."
