Book launch
Local author Paul Myers will launch his new book Rooster in the Cathedral: Reflections of a Pilgrim While Walking to Santiago on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Black Bean on Marine Drive in Gibsons.
The ancient pilgrimage route that leads to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, is a long and often difficult journey. In spite of these demands, the Camino has gained enormous popularity, drawing many thousands of trekkers each year. Myers weaves together his 700-mile walking experience with many years as a professional clergy, a provocateur of the insipid middle, and someone dangerously frank about his own inner struggles. Neither a guidebook nor a travelogue, Rooster in the Cathedral uses the walking journey as a means to reflect on some of the larger, and sometimes intractable, issues of life integral to us all. Avery music
CR Avery performs in two shows at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek on Thursday, Dec. 3 and Friday, Dec. 4 with a string quartet, the Legal Tender Strings. Avery is a beat-boxing poet, and harmonica-playing extraordinaire with a string trio of drums, bass and keytar. What makes this beautiful, says Avery, is it's all done with the string quartet taking on all the styles, shape shifting the songs to their limits. Show starts at 8:30 p.m. Tickets for $10 are at the door. Reserve seating by e-mailing Avery at [email protected].
Turandot revisited
The New York Metropolitan Opera Live in HD presentation of the very sumptuous Turandot on Nov. 7 at the Raven's Cry Theatre was marred by frequent interruptions in the sound transmission. These technical difficulties were experienced worldwide. Raven's Cry has arranged for an encore airing on Dec. 5 at 10 a.m., which the Met assures should be problem free. The Nov. 7 audience will be admitted to the encore showing free of charge if they bring the original ticket stub or programme or can successfully answer a skill tester. New audience is also welcome (and appreciated), but at the usual ticket prices. See: www.ravenscrytheatre.com.
