Kicking off the August long weekend that "raving group of Celtic Gypsy punk rockers from Whitehorse Yukon" makes a return appearance at the Roberts Creek Hall on Saturday, July 31.
According to Ryan Enns, one of the founding members of the WhiskeyDicks along with brothers Curtis and Patrick Ernst, they cooked up a plan to make drinking money by playing songs about "friendship, drinking and drinking with friends" while playing outside a liquor store.
Enns says the band has "a throbbing reputation as one hell of a good time. They're a strange brew of fiddle, cello, guitar, drums and voices spiked with enthusiasm that is infectious and eclecticism that knows no bounds. They play songs about friendship, drinking and drinking with friends with the spirit of the mad and the thirst of a sailor who just got kicked out of his metal band. It is quite simply impossible to have a bad time with them in the room, 'cause they won't let you."
Talking about the band's latest album Get'er Done! in a 2009 interview with Sarah Rowland of the Georgia Straight, Enns discussed the Irish question. "In our live shows, we still play a lot of traditional Irish music," he said, "but with our original songs, we do our own thing and kind of step away from that. And it's getting to the point where we're not Irish enough for Irish pubs, but we're too Irish for sports bars, so we're kind of sitting on the nether regions of Irish and non-Irish music these days."
He added: "Our songs are less about substance and more about substance abuse." But these are serious musicians with many degrees in numerous musical genres and the drinking songs are all in fun.
