GPAG poets
The new exhibition at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) in the Harbour View Room is entitled Powwow Pictures, student art created in the style of Cree artist George Littlechild. This exhibition is a School District No. 46/GPAG partnership with students from six schools taking part. The current show, Words and Image, continues to April 19. This Saturday's weekly reading session features all poets: Joe Denham, Sheila Weaver and Susan Telfer. The public is welcome to hear them read at the gallery starting at 1 p.m. See www.gibsonspublicartgallery.ca for more details.
Costumes
Driftwood Players are in desperate need of costume storage space. The registered non-profit society has been entertaining audiences on the Sunshine Coast for more than 30 years. They work in co-operation, sharing resources with many organizations in the community. In the fall of 2009, the Sunshine Coast Panto Society came under Driftwood's umbrella, nearly doubling its costume collection. Needed is a large, secure and dry space in the Langdale to Roberts Creek area. If you can help out, contact Sandi McGinnis at 604-886-0143 or [email protected].
Slideshow
The Tetrahedron Out-door Club is bringing former Sunshine Coast resident and professional photographer Tony Hoare back to the Coast on April 8 to present a slideshow on the Wenger Patagonian Race. This gruelling race is a true expedition, taking teams of four through lands previously unseen. Racers receive minimal assistance as they traverse through pristine southern Patagonia by means of trekking, climbing and related rope work, kayaking, mountain biking, and backcountry navigation. They often cover hundreds of kilometres without seeing a soul.
Hoare will present photos from the past three years of the race, with the spectacular scenery of Patagonia as a backdrop. Based in Vancouver, Hoare specializes in outdoor adventure. The show is at 7:30 p.m. at Chatelech Theatre, Sechelt. Tickets are available at the door for $8.
Comic artist
Starting Saturday a professional comics and storyboarding artist, Alex Cieslik, holds a workshop where participants can learn to tell a story through this visual medium and how to turn a script into storyboards for comics, animation, film or video games. Sign up for four weeks or drop in to one session for a fee. The workshop is suitable for ages 14 to adult and is held at the Arts Building in Gibsons. See www.artsbuilding.org for more.
Poet reads
The Gibsons Live Poets Society presents George Elliott Clarke on Friday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Bart's Hall in Gibsons.
Clarke was born in the black Loyalist community of Windsor Plains, N.S. His poetry is written in a lyrical style, frequently alluding to his heritage. His numerous books of poetry include Execution Poems (2001), which won a Governor General's Award. Admission is by donation.
Quilt talk
The public is welcome to attend two lectures presented by the Sunshine Coast Quilt Guild. They will be in conjunction with the 2010 Annual Retreat of the Guild.
On Friday, April 9 Daphne Grieg presents My Quilting Adventure. Come hear how Daphne went from a 9-to-5 financial officer and data analyst to an award-winning quilter, author, teacher and designer.
On Saturday, April 10, Carol Seeley presents So You Want to Show Off your Quilt. This lecture will outline the why, where and how of submitting your quilt or fibre art piece for show and juried exhibition. Hear from someone who has successfully entered some of the most prestigious quilt and fibre arts shows in North America and won. Both lectures take place at 7 p.m. in the Chapel at the Salvation Army Camp Sunrise by the Langdale ferry terminal. Admission is $5 at the door.
