Spooky concert from Coast Symphony

Art Beat

Something Wicked This Way Comes is a spooky Halloween concert on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall. Presented by the Coast Symphony Orchestra (CSO), with a special appearance by members of the Community Orchestra’s Junior String Ensemble, this ghoulish evening will get you in the mood for Halloween. The ghost of Arturo Toscanini returns to lead the CSO as they perform a wide variety of spookiness from macabre dances, funereal marches and the eerie theme from Midsomer Murders to the ever popular Toccata and Fugue by Bach. The spectral maestro (artistic director, Edette Gagné) assures us there will be something for everyone. The music will be accompanied by images on the big screen. Along with prizes for costumes and a reception after, the evening promises more fun than a barrel of zombies! Tickets are $15 (children 12 and under free, accompanied by an adult) and are available from orchestra members, as well as at Laedeli in Gibsons and Strait Music in Sechelt. See www.sunshinecoastorchestra.ca for more.

Emerging Sounds

Steve Weave will be your host for an evening of music featuring talented students from the Sound Studio, along with an electronic dance band from Powell River (Texture and Light) and a newly-arrived to the Coast via San Francisco and the UK, DJ Anthony Trainer, aka PropaTingz. Along with these great acts, there will be enticing outdoor-themed visuals, mountain bike films, shadow jam corners, a photo booth, snacks, beverages and a liquor licence for the grown-ups. This is an all ages gig themed for young and old. Stop by the Sechelt Band Hall (behind McDonald’s) at around 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 23. Tickets are $10 at the door. It’s part of the Sechelt Arts Festival.

Boolesque

Got a note from Jenny Sweet Cheeks (aka Jenica Vaneli) about a performance coming up from a group of local women. By day they are baristas, moms, managers and farmers, but lately these women have been donning sexy lingerie and unleashing their inner divas in anticipation of the Boolesque show at the Roberts Creek Hall on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Velvet Rouge-Lettes, as they are called, are very excited to entertain you with choreographed numbers, fun costumes and sizzling solos. Vancouver’s Crystal Precious will emcee and help crank up the temperature. After the women leave the stage, The Funkdealer and Jason Whyte will spin some tunes to get you up dancing. Tickets are $25 available at Strait Coffee, MELOmania or Black Swan Tattoo shop in Gibsons. Dress to impress.
