Spanish teacher Marlene Samper has a long-term goal. She wants to share the culture of Spanish speaking countries, to bring the nature and art of various Latin American countries to the Coast for others to enjoy. Samper will host a Spanish immersion weekend this June 4 and 5 in which participants will learn new vocabulary in her native language and enjoy the art, architecture, food, music and environment of several countries while working from a classroom at Roberts Creek Community School.

Originally from Colombia, Samper and her artist/photographer husband Diego Samper have lived on the Coast for the last few years where they run a small publishing business. They have co-authored books and curated several art exhibits together, in Canada and internationally. Marlene teaches Spanish at home and in Vancouver.

The first day will focus on Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Colombia. The second day will focus on nature and the environment in the Andes and Caribbean using a selection from Samper's slides. Food is a huge part of the culture; every meal will be different. Participants will help prepare the food. "It'll be a like a big party for two days," Samper says.

Three teachers will be available for three different levels of Spanish conversation. This weekend is not for total beginners. You must have some simple language and will spend time learning basics of Spanish and increasing your vocabulary by doing activities together.

Registration continues up to 10 a.m. Saturday morning, but it's best to phone in advance to 604-886-3353.
