There will be sing-along fun and a release party for Walker's new book of verses for children, Behind the Moon. Tickets are $6 each, available at Giggle 'n Bloom Children's Store, Molly's Music Shop in Gibsons and Pastimes Toy Store in Sechelt.

Vintage film

Vintage film night at The Arts Building presents Charlie Chaplin tonight (March 11) with doors opening at 7 p.m. Admission is $2 for all ages.

Black Holes

Tonight (March 11) the Royal Astronomical Society presents astronomer Bill Phillips in a presentation, Black Holes and the Galactic Centre. Using images and recent research from the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, he'll give an upbeat and informative talk with a few of his own thoughts on what's inside a black hole event horizon, how our galaxy got its black heart and what is that stuff called dark matter? Lots at GPAG

Shout Out 2, a young people's show, opened March 7 at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) and runs until March 28 with an artists' reception tonight (March 11) from 4 to 7 p.m. Also, in the Harbour View room, Emmanuel "Noli" Samaras delights with Celebrating Human Ingenuity in Electronics and Plastics, running until March 28.

The Best of Spring Break comes to the GPAG March 21 to 25 (mornings) with teacher Miyuki Shinkai. Classes for two children's age groups are offered. Call 604-886-0531 to register. A fee of $30 includes all art materials. Also, GPAG is now accepting submissions from artists in any medium for 2012. Their website gives guidelines at www.gibsons publicartgallery.ca.

Open house

Musician Steve Wright invites the public to an open house at his new studio, 5536 Wharf Rd. in Sechelt starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Sound in Sechelt is a playground for music and art for all ages, including everything from standard guitar lessons to experimental sound events using Wright's fun equipment. St. Patrick's Day

Calling all leprechauns: Gramma's Pub in Gibsons will feature St. Paddy's Day festivities on Thursday, March 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. with live music in the form of Celtic tunes from the youthful Bad to the Bow, a fundraiser to support local youth musicians.

Film

The Sunshine Coast Film Society presents Turtles Can Fly, an Iranian drama, in Kurdish with subtitles, on Monday, March 14. The film is a heart wrenching and acutely poignant look at the effects of war on children with amazingly good performances from a very young and non-professional cast. It screens at the Heritage Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. Members: $5, single event: $8.

CD release party

Vocalist Miss Erica Dee is coming to the Coast for the first time for a CD release party at the Jordao Studios in Gibsons on March 13 and 14 at 9 p.m. After relocating from the Kootenays to LA and touring extensively with Pigeon John, she returns to B.C. with a basket full of brand new goodies, her highly anticipated mixtape, Golden, as well as a brand new music video, For a Minute, and a highly eclectic DJ set for your enjoyment. Take Dee's vocal class Monday, March 14 in the afternoon. Proceeds benefit the non-profit S.P.A.C.E. Society's garden project. Jordao Studios is located at 626 Shaw Road in Gibsons. Live by satellite

Several shows of interest are coming to the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt, live by satellite. The first is La Phil Live, Gustavo Dudamel conducts Tchaikovsky, on Sunday, March 13 at 2 p.m. This all Tchaikovsky program features three Overture Fantasies inspired by Shakespeare's plays. Tickets are at the door or call the theatre at 604-885-4597 to reserve.

On Thursday, March 17 the National Theatre Live series presents Danny Boyle's production of Frankenstein, a play by Nick Dear and based on the novel by Mary Shelley. Ticket prices are $22 General, $18 Senior and $14 Child/Student. Please do not bring children under the age of six years.

Theatre group?

A theatre group at Christenson Village is open to all who are interested in having some fun while developing skits and plays for seniors by seniors. Theatre experience is not a requirement; this is all about learning, performance and fun. From simple readings to complete productions, seniors will find that performing brings better health. Book recognition?

Sunshine Coast authors Kim La Fave and Gary Kent received good news this week. Fishing with Gubby, their children's book about the life of a West Coast salmon fisherman, has received its second award nomination. Shortlisted just last month for a Joe Shuster Award, the book has now caught the attention of the Canadian Library Association who shortlisted the book and La Fave for the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator's Award, awarded each year to the illustrator of a noteworthy Canadian book that appeals to children up to 12 years. The winners of the award will be announced prior to the CLA's national conference and trade show in Halifax May 26.
