Shout out for kids

Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) is repeating its popular children's art classes during spring break, March 8 to 12. Two age groups ( five to eight and nine to 12) paint in the mornings, with artist/teacher Miyuki Shinkai.

The submission deadline is March 1 for a special show entitled Shout Out! featuring art submitted by young people. Their work will be shown at the gallery from March 10 to 24. Note that you can still catch the GPAG's current show, the Todd Clark Invitational, until March 8.

This weekend

Artesia Coffeehouse is on tonight (Friday) with the Back Porch Reunion, a family duo, and several musicians new to Coast stages at the Arts Centre in Sechelt at 8 p.m. with doors at 7. Tickets are at the door on a sliding scale.

On Saturday night, Feb. 27, The Copper Stills play at the Gibsons Legion, 8 p.m. to midnight, with special guests Rocket Lawnchair. There is no cover charge for this event. See www.thecopperstills.com for more about the band.

And on Sunday, you can have A Way with Words, a Gibsons Library Founda-tion event involving word games with registration at 1:30 p.m. at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre. For more information, call 604-886-7226 or email [email protected].

Artswalk

A colourful one page guide to finding art, Artswalk 2010, has been circulating around Gibsons to encourage visitors on a self-guided walking tour. There are now 10 arts-related places to visit in the Lower Gibsons area including galleries, frame shops and art supply shops. For details, call Cindy Buis at 604-886-1250.

Wild birthday

On Saturday, join the big bash at the Gibsons Legion to hear from many local performers.

The Wild Bistro is celebrating their fourth birthday by throwing the party with special guests Deanna Cartea, Carnival Era and The Colorifics. Music goes from 7 p.m. to midnight. Your $20 ticket includes birthday cake, door prizes, silent auction and other surprises. This event is also a fundraiser for Driftwood Players, to help support local theatre. Tickets are available at the Wild and at Take 5 Media in Gibsons.

Trashed

The Green Team at Gibsons United Church presents an environmentally related film on the first Friday of the month.

On March 5 at 7 p.m. they will screen Trashed. The film is a road trip through the afterlife of your garbage. Director Bill Kirkos visited 10 states and parts of Canada collecting footage about the fast growing disposal of what society deems to be waste. See www.gibsonsunitedchurch.ca for more.

Eldercare launch

Surviving Eldercare: Where Their Needs End & Yours Begin is a helpful book by local author Ellen Besso. A book launch and discussion will take place on Saturday, March 6, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Gibsons Public Library. Join the author as she shares her experiences as a caregiver to her aging mother and offers her expertise for women struggling with the challenge of balancing caregiving responsibilities with their personal life.
