On Sept. 20, the Sunshine Coast Film Society will launch its fourth season offering extraordinary Canadian and international films to a Sechelt audience. The first film of the season, A Brilliant Young Mind, is a moving and sometimes hilarious British production following the amazing career of a mildly autistic teenager. Three more films will be screened in Sechelt this year and more in 2016.
Now in its 15th year, the film society is a non-profit organization with some 40 volunteers and strongly supported by Coast businesses. Originally, films were shown only in Gibsons, at the Heritage Playhouse theatre. Many people in Sechelt, especially seniors, balked at the drive to Gibsons, and a test screening, organized by Karyn Burney, Sechelt co-ordinator, and subsequent events proved that an audience exists there.
Currently films are shown at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre, which has been upgraded with a Blue-Ray player and other technical upgrades raising it to a professional standard. Other possible theatre venues are currently under investigation.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Mondays at Gibsons Playhouse, and 2 p.m. Sundays at Sechelt Seniors’ Centre.
Basic membership in the society is $20. (A $99 membership gives access to all films plus two single event guest passes.) Ticket prices are $5 for regular members and single event tickets are $9. For more information, see www.scfs.ca or call 604-886-2965.
