To celebrate publication of the book Women of Pender Harbour, Rose-Ellen Nichols, a daughter of the Harbour, returned to her home in recital on Sunday, June 27.

From the moment she walked on stage, her beautiful smile, her choice of repertoire describing her musical journey beginning with her first vocal lessons on the Coast, and her delightful introductions to why each song was dear to her heart totally enthralled a most appreciative audience. And then there is her voice - a mezzo-soprano with many touring productions under her belt including several performances in Europe, Nichols effortlessly filled the School of Music in Madeira Park.

From a County Donegal lullaby to a Grieg Norwegian dance to lieder of Brahms, Mahler, Saint-Saens and Bizet, singing in French and German and then back to English for such appropriate songs from the sea - we loved every piece she chose so carefully for us for this performance. Her diction, stage presence, interpretation of so many different styles - what a performer.

It was truly a memorably afternoon in Pender Harbour for Nichols, her family and her many fans.

Michael Onwood, the official accompanist for the Canadian National Musical Festival, capably accompanied her. We look forward to having these two talented performers back in Madeira Park soon.
