Sechelt artist Brian Romer's paintingLe Dernier Jour, Courtaulyis featured on the Pinot Gris label and he will be there from 4 to 6 p.m. to sign bottles of the 2008 vintage.

Quilt day

The Sunshine Coast Quilters Guild is hosting their firstResource Dayof the season this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.at the Holy Family Parish Hall in West Sechelt.The guestquilter will be Carol Piercy doing a trunk show of her works. Visitors can drop in for $7.

Sand Mandala

Tibetan Lama Tenzin Tsundu will visit to build a traditional sand mandala of Green Tara, the female Buddha of Compassion, in Sechelt at St. Hilda's Anglican Church from now until Sept. 27.

Each day will begin with 20 minutes of chanting and you are welcome to drop by to hear the chants and watch the progress. Entrance is by donation. Hours are: Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the closing ceremony and sand dispersal at 3. Blind

The SC Film Society screens their next presentation on Monday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse.

Set in the late 19th century at a palatial country estate, the Dutch film, Blind, is the touching story of an albino woman who is hired to read to a young blind man. See www.scfs.ca for more.

Drawing class

Local artist Pat Collier is again offering a drawing course for those who believe they can't draw, but wish they could.

This series has been specifically designed to help the beginner explore his or her own inner artist. The instructor is convinced that each person has a natural ability to express creatively - with just a little assistance. Personal attention is given to each student.

Classical drawing techniques and more will be taught in a safe, supportive environment. This eight-week course is on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and begins the week of Sept. 27 in Lower Gibsons. This series is also offered in workshop format on four alternate Saturdays starting Oct. 2 from noon to 4 p.m. Register at 604-886-0124.

Black Cat

Sounds Like a Revolution is a feature documentary about a new generation of activist musicians who are living proof that music is an important and powerful tool in the struggle for social change. Four artists, including Michael Franti, became pioneers when they were forced to invent new and unique ways to break through every attempt to censor them. Also screening is Oil BP, a Sunshine Coast hip hop parody spoofing the disastrous Gulf oil spill. Members of the cast and crew will be in attendance to share their reflections on the role of music in the protest movement. Open house

The Arbutus Sounds Chorus is having an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.at the Davis Bay Community Hall.They hope that those interested in singing and looking for a group to join will come and see what the Chorus is all about. Usually they practice every Tuesday at Roberts Creek Elementary School, but to accommodate more people, they have moved to Davis Bay for one night only.Refreshments will be served and all are invited. Poetry

Gibsons Live Poets Society presents Tim Lilburn on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Wheatberries Bakery in Gibsons.

This by donation reading features Tim Lilburn, the author of eight books of poetry, including Kill-site, To the River, and Moosewood Sandhills. He is currently at work on new poems and essays.

FOWA co-operation

The Festival of the Written Arts has made the decisionto move the dates of the2011 festivaltoAug. 4 to 7 following theBC Day long weekend, says producer Jane Davidson.

They originally planned to hold the festival Aug. 18 to 21 because the Coasters Car Clubis holding their event Aug. 12 to 14. Unfortunately, those dates put them on the same weekend as the Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival and the two festivals have many patrons and volunteers in common.
