Rising stars close out season

Two of Canada's rising young concert stars will close out the 2007/08 season of the Coast Recital Society (CRS) March 2.Baritone Tyler Duncan and pianist Erika Switzer will perform at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 2 at Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.

Two of Canada's rising young concert stars will close out the 2007/08 season of the Coast Recital Society (CRS) March 2.Baritone Tyler Duncan and pianist Erika Switzer will perform at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 2 at Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.

Following a pre-concert chat at 1:30 p.m., the duo will perform five songs on the theme of water by Franz Schubert, three song cycles: Ralph Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, L'horizon chimérique by Gabriel Fauré and Let Us Garlands Bring by Gerald Finzi and Three Cabaret Songs composed by William Bolcom.

B.C.-born Duncan and Switzer have recently returned to North America after several years of study in Augsburg, Germany. They have been performing as a duo for some time, to enthusiastic acclaim from critics and audiences.

Duncan and Switzer have made New York City their base. She is completing collaborative piano studies at the Juilliard School, performing frequently with Duncan. His career includes a busy schedule of recitals in Canada, the U.S., Germany, Sweden, France and South Africa. He is in high demand as a versatile soloist who is at home singing in many languages music of the lieder, opera and oratorio genres spanning the ages from baroque to modern. Duncan's musical education includes degrees in music from the University of British Columbia, the Hochschule für Musik Augsburg, where he studied under fellow Canadian singer Edith Wiens, and from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich.

"Duncan and Switzer are among the best and the brightest of Canada's next constellation of recital stars," said CRS artistic director Frances Heinsheimer Wainwright.

"I'm delighted they've agreed to stay and play for students at the West Sechelt and Kinnikinnick elementary schools on Monday, March 3, as part of the CRS Artists in the Community program," she said.
