Did you know there is an average of 613 seeds in a pomegranate? Serendipitously, 6-1-3 is also the Ottawa area code. The symbolic correlation between poetry and the pomegranate is long-standing, and over the past few years the connection between Ottawa and spoken word has become equally essential. In a city built on the power of rhetoric and presence, spoken word has become an integral hub for the artistic community.
This Easter Sunday, Jordao Studios and the Sunshine Coast Jazz & Entertainment Society present an incredible line-up of movers and shakers from Ottawa's spoken word scene, many of whom have begun to generate international acclaim while stepping outside the limits of poetry as an art form.
The showcase, hosted by Sunshine Coast resident Jonathan Appleseed, will feature a dynamic and collaborative set of performances by individual world slam poetry champion Ian Keteku, two-time national team champion Open Secret, national team champion Prufrock, as well as accomplished organizers and poets Hyfidelik and Brad Morden.
The group will hold an open-format poetry writing workshop beginning at 2 p.m. Writers of all ages, skill levels and styles are encouraged to attend. The evening will begin with an open mic, with priority given to workshop participants.
The Sound recording studio is located at 5536 Wharf Rd. in Sechelt. Advance tickets are $12 and can be purchased at Strait Music, MELOmania and Gaia's Fair Trade. Doors and open mic sign-up will start at 7 p.m. The event is open to all ages, but the evening showcase will contain some mature content. For more information, call 604-740-2380.
