Award-winning pianist Avan Yu brings this year's Coast Recital Society (CRS) concert season to an exciting conclusion this Sunday, March 21, at 2:30 p.m. at the Raven's Cry Theatre.
Widely acknowledged as one of Canada's finest young pianists, Yu performs a program of music by Beethoven, Schumann, Scriabin, Bartók, Chopin and Liszt.
"Avan Yu is an exceptional young musician," said CRS artistic director Fran-ces Heinsheimer Wainwright. "We're delighted to present him during this 2010 Olympics year celebrating youth and excellence."
At the age of 22, Yu first performed in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in 2008 and won the silver medal at the Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition that same year.
He recently made his debut with the National Arts Centre Orchestra under the baton of Pinchas Zukerman in a performance that included Chopin's Polonaise Brilliante with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and introduced Prime Minister Stephen Harper's surprise appearance onstage at the same gala.
Yu first performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14 and has formed a special relationship with the orchestra. After four engagements in subsequent years, he was the featured soloist on the orchestra's recent Canadian tour with appearances in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
He has also performed with the Dresden Philharmonic, Victoria Sym-phony, Orchestre Phil-harmonique of Morocco, Ottawa Symphony, Xiamen Philharmonic in China, Windsor Symphony, Réal Filharmonía de Galicia, B.C. Chinese Orchestra and Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, Yu currently studies at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin with Klaus Hellwig.
