Penny Lang plays

When Penny Lang leaves home to go to the Pender Harbour Music School for her Nov. 18 concert, it will be a very short journey; in fact, she may choose to walk because it's just down the road from where she now lives.

When Penny Lang leaves home to go to the Pender Harbour Music School for her Nov. 18 concert, it will be a very short journey; in fact, she may choose to walk because it's just down the road from where she now lives. She is a recent addition to the Pender Harbour music scene, moving here from Montreal in 2005, and her life's journey has been a long and fascinating one.

Lang was born in east-end Montreal to a musical family and became a "foundation stone" on the North American folk scene of the 60s and 70s. She has played for fishermen in Newfoundland, farmers in Alberta and audiences in coffeehouses and festivals throughout North America, Australia, Italy, Denmark, France and the U.K. She has released seven critically acclaimed CDs. In 2002, she was nominated for a Juno for her CD Gather Honey. In 2003, she received the first ever Folquebec Prix Folqui for lifetime achievement in music. Along the way, she has made many friends in the music biz. Chris Frye, lead vocalist for The Bills, who just played Pender Harbour, urged audience members not to miss this concert, as did Connie Kaldor, who played here last year.

Joining her for this performance will be her long-time friend and collaborator, Dave Clarke, one of Canada's most accomplished and tasteful acoustic guitarists. Enjoy Canada's "First Lady of Folk" at the Pender Harbour Music Society's Performance Centre, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 at John Henry's in Garden Bay, Harbour Insurance in Madeira Park, Talewind Books in Sechelt and Coast Books in Gibsons. Our thanks to Pender Harbour Diesel for partial sponsorship of this performance.
