This year's annual Show-case of the Arts put on by senior fine arts and performing arts students of Chatelech Secondary School will be presented a little earlier in the year than usual, on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Highlights include five short plays including two original compositions, and some dance pieces. Once again, the evening will be a fundraiser to support students in their careers in the arts.
The production reflects what students do in their fine arts classes, said acting 11/12 and drama 10 teacher Paddy McCallum.
"They are an exceptionally talented group this year," he said. "And I'm very fortunate. They have written or chosen the plays and cast them and in many cases directed them, with me as a guide on the side. So this will really be their evening."
The showcase begins at 6:30 with a performance in the school's foyer by Carolyn Mitchell's concert band. During the intermission the school's jazz band will also perform. Ellory Robertson's fine arts and photography students will display their recent work in the foyer so the audience can browse while they listen to music.
Teacher Maggie Marsh's textiles students will model some new fashions. There will be two 45-minute performances in the theatre of plays, dance and music.
A drama 10 student, Julian Figueroa, will be acting in a new play that he has both written and directed, The Butlers and the Billionaire. And A Very Friendly Neighbourhood is a new play written and directed by Baylee Higgins, who also appears in it.
LoveWithCaution, a new dance group formed by Paige, Eva, Clifford and Zane Nepoose, will perform a new piece, Morning after Dark. Deborah Izad and her group of dancers will premiere a new dance piece that she has choreographed. New songs by Lacy Wells, Sarah and Mary Casey, and many others are also featured.
Willow Koski-Kendel is directing her acting 11 classmates in two plays a new production of Edward Albee's famous one-act play, The Sandbox, and a hilarious performance of The Case of the Frustrated Corpse. A highlight will be the drama 10 performance of the romantic comedy, A Gathering of Friends, which will close the evening.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children available at the school.
