Novelist Joan Thomas will read at the Arts Centre in Sechelt next Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m.

Thomas read at the Festival of the Written Arts in 2010 from her celebrated second novel, Curiosity, about 19th century British fossil hunter Mary Anning.

Her latest novel, The Opening Sky, takes us to the here and now with a Winnipeg family surprised by an adolescent pregnancy. The novel is praised as “deeply felt, sharply observed, and utterly contemporary, balancing the dark underside of modern life with wit.”

Opening has been met with immediate and enthusiastic acclaim.  Short-listed for the Governor General’s Award, it won the CBC (and Manitoba) Best Book of the Year awards, among other honours.
