The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is pleased to announce Alternate Light, an exhibition of work by Kristjana Gunnars.
After years of commuting between the Sunshine Coast and Edmonton, Gunnars was able to make the Coast her permanent home. Immigration from Iceland in 1964 was the beginning of a life lived in many languages and in many artistic disciplines, including writing essays, fiction and poetry while working as a professor of creative writing at the University of Alberta.
Settling here in 2004 brought the beginning, in 2006, of a new discipline, painting.
"Interestingly, I found the inner process of writing and painting to be quite similar - both engage the artist in an intense journey of discovery," she said.
She adds that she is seeking through her paintings to find "the light [water, a tree] gives off, a kind of hidden light."
Gunnars' solo exhibition will feature four very large canvases in the larger side of the gallery and smaller works on the smaller side.
The community is invited to a reception on Wednesday, Feb. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. that will open the exhibition in the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. The show will run to Sunday, Feb. 27.
The Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre is a public gallery. Work exhibited is for sale.
