Coast youth who want to advance their love of music are invited to apply for a new funding opportunity.
Sunshine Coast Community Services Society (SCCSS) and Coast Cultural Alliance (CCA) have recently announced that applications will be accepted for this year's Music for Youth Endowment Grant.
"This is our inaugural grant," said Bronia Kingsbury of the Music for Youth committee, "and we intend it to be annual."
Applicants may request funding assistance for opportunities such as music lessons, musical instruments, and/or electronic production, for example, studio time or studio mentoring, to the value of $500.
The idea for this fund began in 2005 when several Chatelech Secondary School students including Daniel Kingsbury, Matt Posnikoff and other members of the Waking Life student music project, wanted to see kids who loved music have the funds to help them study or get valuable studio time. Other organizations collaborated with the student instigators: CCA and SCCSS, with the agency's funds being held by the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation.
Any youth aged 13 to 19 residing on the Coast who requires financial assistance to further musical goals can apply, particularly if they have an interest in creating original music or performing and recording music. It helps if they also have an interest in contributing back to the community, as the Waking Life students did.
Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Nov. 30. You can pick up an application at the front desk of SCCSS, call 604-885-5881 or download the form at: www.suncoastarts.com.
Applications may also be completed by a nominator, for example, a parent or a teacher who would like to recommend a youth, with the consent of the youth. If an application by a nominator is shortlisted, the youth will be asked to complete an application, too.
If a youth would like assistance in completing an application, he or she may contact Vicki Dobbyn of SCCSS at [email protected].
