The Cove

The Sunshine Coast Film Society is screening a controversial film at Heritage Playhouse on Monday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m.

The Australian film The Cove tells the story of a group of activists, led by renowned dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry, who infiltrate a cove near Taijii, Japan, to expose shocking animal abuse and a serious threat to human health. The film was the winner of the Audience Award at Sun-dance and Inter-national Docu-mentary Festival (Amsterdam) and Best Environ-ment Docu-mentary (Media Awards) and has been shortlisted for the 2010 Academy Awards.

Bill Wareham from the David Suzuki Foundation will be speaking following the film.

The jazz duo Anagram, with Graham Ord on sax and flute and Lumiere on piano, will play from their new CD. The evening will close with Carnival Era playing Bohemian and melodramatic pop songs as Chelsea Crawford gets to shine on the keys, Ross Hastings on vocals and guitar, joined by Chris Mortensen and Spencer Watts.

Hammond concert

Mezzo soprano Patricia Hammond grew up on the Coast, and now lives in London where she performs professionally. She was visiting her family on the Coast recently and gave a free concert for the Christenson Village residents. Hammond contributes regularly to seniors' home entertainment in England and Ireland, but in this case she was doing it mainly for her friend, Jean Clarke, who moved to the home in the fall. Clarke still sings for the Tot Lot with her sister, Pops Webber.
