The recently completed expansion and renovation of the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre has resulted in a pleasing uptake in both size and activities. It has also encouraged more variety in entertainment. The Centre’s vice-president, Chris Kane, says its May 10 fundraising evening featuring The Legendary Ladies is sure be a hit.

“It will be a departure from the usual entertainment we present. We want our activities and entertainment to stay in people’s minds long after our renovations. And we want it to appeal to a broader demographic on the Sunshine Coast that includes seniors and others.”

To accomplish that, the centre offers an appealing array of activities and services that might surprise some people. “It’s a happening place,” Kane said.

The renovations have been a contributing factor in membership numbers that are already 40 per cent higher than last year, and they continue to grow.

The fundraising event should indeed be memorable. Appearing onstage will be Conni Smudge, Carlotta Gurl and Jaylene Tyme, famously known for their impeccable female impersonations. Smudge, otherwise known as Chris Bolton, will MC the program and says his on-stage character, Mz. Conni Smudge, has been a quarter of a century in the making. “She is well known on the entertainment circuit in Canada and beyond, and has performed solo in some of the most unlikely of places, from biker bars in Nanaimo to grand theatres in Europe. She’s done them all.”

Bolton further expands on Conni’s unique style, humour and unparalleled ability to engage with an audience, saying, “She is one of the most sought after personalities in the country. Her busy schedule and the high demand for her performances are proof that she truly is The Unstoppable Conni Smudge.

Carlotta Gurl and Jaylene Tyme are also well-known, world-class performers and impersonators who have for years had their own shows. It’s full-time work and they couldn’t be busier.

For more than 15 years, Carlotta Gurl has amazed audiences with her female impersonations of some of the world’s most loved performers.

Jaylene Tyme’s transformations are so complete that even the tiniest characteristics are accentuated. Some of her most notable characters include Dolly Parton, Barbara Streisand, Marilyn Monroe and Cher. The performers’ unique personas will be seen in their impersonating routines that include singing, dancing and some catwalk dazzle.

Bolton said the Vancouver-based trio often performs together for special events such as fundraising. “Our aim is to kick it up and spread joy, with lots of laughs. On May 10th, fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a hoot.”
