The Landing Artists are staging a pop-up exhibition and sale at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Gardens (5941 Mason Rd., Sechelt) on the long weekend: Saturday, July 31 (1-6); Sunday, Aug.1 (1-6); and Monday, Aug. 2 (1-5).

This is a new venue for this group, and their first time showing in a Sechelt location, so they are looking forward to greeting many new friends and art appreciators as well as familiar faces from Gibsons.

New works

The show will feature new works from eight Landing Artists: Charmaine Bayntun, Diane Clark, Ed Hill, Nancy Hugh, Trisha Joel, Che Kehoe, Ruth Rodgers, and Coralie Swaney.

Bayntun has been busy creating more of her poetic watercolours and acrylics of herons and weathered ropes, inspired by her daily walks around Gibsons with her spaniel, also named Gibson.

Clark’s jewelry is always a hit, especially her unique cuff bracelets that provide the finishing touch to a casual outfit.

Hill’s pristinely painted coastal scenes always come with a story, and the renowned raconteur will be on hand to reveal the inspiration related to your choice of image. He’ll be selling his original paintings as well as prints, cards, and copies of Busted, his popular book of memoirs of his time in the RCMP on the Coast.

Hugh has spent her pandemic time playing with cyanotypes and other unusual photographic techniques, and her small prints and cards will be sure to intrigue you.

Joel’s plant-dyed textiles are always snapped up quickly, especially her soft silk scarves, handy totes, and plump pillows.

Kehoe (a licensed electrician) is off coast, still helping the good folks of Fort McMurray rebuild their town, but her quirky and inventive lamps will be available at the show.

Rodgers’ little pastels of kids on the beach have grown up; she’ll have several pieces in a larger size along with a variety of coastal scenes in oil. She’ll also have autographed copies of her latest historical fiction novel, This Fair Land, on hand.

Swaney has spent the pandemic dreaming up plot lines for her well-loved character sculptures. They’ll appear in both 3D and in acrylic paintings, and a series featuring the adventures of three flamboyant females will have you dreaming of travel again.

The Botanical Gardens themselves are a tempting destination for a day out. Make a day of it: art, gardens, a day trip – just what we’ve all been longing for.

If you need even more incentive, there will be a daily draw for a well-stuffed gift basket of treasures from each of these artists.

There’s no admission fee, but donations will be collected at the door for a Residential School Survivors Fund.
