Join the Kallisto Trio as they return to Sechelt to explore the myth of the Greek figure, Kallisto, through words and music. From Bach to Elvis Costello, Latin, Queen and French Canadian folk song, Kallisto Trio will take you to another world full of gods and goddesses, love and pathos.

This foremost a cappella trio of Vancouver women is Fabiana Katz, Karen Mang and Catherine Laub, who replaces Edette Gagne, Coast Symphony director, who left the group this year.

They perform at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt this Sunday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at the door.

This weekend

A gala art auction runs tonight (Jan. 21) from 6 to 9 p.m. and will benefit the Gibsons Public Art Gallery and Habitat for Humanity. There may still be tickets available, so call 604-886-0531 to find out.

Dance to the salsa sounds of Rumba Calzada this Saturday evening at 9 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Hall, or take in a poetry reading tonight (Jan. 21) and workshop tomorrow at Wheatberries Bakery in Gibsons. See www.gibsonspoets.ca for more.

Katherine Penfold sings on Saturday night at Lina's Lounge and Grill. She has just released her second album, Live at the Park, which features a stable of Winnipeg's finest musicians and captures the electric atmosphere shared by more than 200 Winnipeggers earlier this year.

Originally from Nova Scotia, she now calls Gibsons home. See more about her at www.katherinepenfold.ca.

Fall film

The SC Film Society presents an American drama/fantasy film, The Fall, a spectacle of beauty and imagination on Monday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Coffeehouse

The first Artesia Coffee-house of the year is next Friday, Jan. 28, at the Sun-shine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt with doors opening at 7 p.m. and show time at 8.

The evening starts with Back Porch Reunion, a father daughter duo of Rosalee and Dale Stavroff, guitar, fiddle and vocals of ol' time feel good music.

Newcomers to our stage, singer/songwriter Hersel Frimer followed by Deanna Cartea with her captivating vocals, sing haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. To close, a performance by Bits of String with Kaia Nielsen, bass, and Mark Lebbell, guitar, who like to call their music Canadicana, drawing inspiration from non-traditional roots cover tunes.

Also, enjoy treats by Trish and the gallery art show. Tickets are $10, available at the door. Reservations can be made at [email protected].
