Inspiring a cornucopia of creativity

Visions of Home, a partnership project between the Gibsons Public Art Gallery and Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast, has inspired a vibrant and diverse show of nearly 50 artworks.

Visions of Home, a partnership project between the Gibsons Public Art Gallery and Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast, has inspired a vibrant and diverse show of nearly 50 artworks.

The show features the works of emerging artists of all ages, as well as some of the Coast's most cherished artists, including Greta Guzek, Josefa Fritz-Barham, Helen Broadfoot and Alan Sirulnikoff.

Gallery president Rod Olafson said he was delighted when Susan Furze arrived last Friday with a beautiful stained glass model house, resulting from her own artistic contemplations of "home," the theme of this innovative exhibition.

"It is truly inspiring that this project has tapped in to so much artistic support of Habitat's efforts here on the Coast," added Habitat executive director Ron Pepper. "Obviously, home represents not only a safe, familial place, but also a place where creativity can flourish."

The variety of works range from sophisticated sculptures by Ian Hooley and Suzanne Biden, to an enthusiastically painted group of milk cartons entitled "Fantasy House," created by nine-year-old artist Landseer Enga.

Tomorrow (Jan. 15) from 4 to 6 p.m., the public is invited to attend a "sneak peek" of the paintings, sculptures, photography, pottery, folk art and media art all on display at the gallery. Refreshments will be served as the silent auction is launched in preparation for its premiere event of the winter.

The Visions of Home art auction gala will be held on Friday, Jan. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. when Ed Hill will set the live auction bidding into action on approximately 15 art works, including one of his own limited editions. The door prize is quite literally a door to be prized, as Jan Poynter has created a very impressive trompe l'oeil on an actual wooden door purchased at the Habitat ReStore. The gala art auction will feature other unique prizes such as a $500 gift certificate toward a mirrored creation by Nancy Hache at the Waltzing Whippet.

For those attendees who are yearning for an escape from home, the $45 ticket price to the gala could also net a Vancouver night on the town that includes hotel, dinner, ferry costs and tickets to a Vancouver Canucks game or an evening at the Arts Club Theatre. Tickets to this event are available at the gallery or Gaia's Fair Trade in Gibsons or Coast Copy in Sechelt. All proceeds will benefit the gallery and Habitat for Humanity equally.
