Dance Works Academy is holding a special highlights performance this Saturday, June 4, at 7 p.m. at Elphinstone Secondary School featuring choreography from competition and exam classes as well as student choreography and guest performers.
The highlights show, held in advance of Dance Works' recitals on June 11, is a fundraiser for the graduating students' scholarships and the Dance Works Scholarship program for low income families. Tickets are available at Peggy Sue's and Chemistry; adults cost $8, kids $5 or buy them at the door for $12.
Wood and music
Woods Showcase at Sunnycrest Mall will feature a woodworking demonstration from puzzle maker Albert Edge on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Music begins at Woods at 2 p.m. from Ken Dalgleish and Graham Ord as part of the Gibsons Landing Jazz Week program. Events are free and all are welcome.
Memphis returns?
Captured live in HD on Broadway, the Tony award-winning musical Memphis will return to the big screen by popular demand at Raven's Cry Theatre, on Sunday, June 5 at 2 p.m. Audiences have loved this energetic, yet touching story about fame, forbidden love and the birth of rock and roll. Serenade concert
Coast Phoenix Singers present Serenade for a Summer's Day on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Gibsons United Church. Their spring concert is an eclectic mix of choral and instrumental music. Coast Phoenix Singers are directed by Bill Bourns and accompanied on piano by Tom Kellough. Guest performers will be Nicholas Simons (cello) and Emily Wood (solo piano). Earthquake author
Jerry Thompson, the Sechelt author of the recently released Cascadia's Fault, The Deadly Earthquake That Will Devastate North America, (Harper Collins) will speak at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons on Sunday at 8 p.m.
The documentary filmmaker has been following the story of earthquakes ever since his encounter with the Mexico City quake back in the 1980s. His presentation includes slides and time for questions. Tickets are $10 at the door. Everyone is welcome. Doors open at 7:30.
Art show
The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is pleased to announce an exhibition of Paul Clancy's photographs, which were recently exhibited at the Gibsons Landing Public Art Gallery, opening in Sechelt at the Arts Centre with a reception on Wednesday, June 8, at 7 p.m.
Creative Creek
You are invited to Creative in the Creek Salon showcasing the creative life in Roberts Creek and environs on Thursday, June 9, at the Gumboot Café starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation. Books and CDs will be available at intermission. Mystery author
It's fitting that the organizers of Bloody Words 2011, the largest annual mystery conference in Canada, would ask Sechelt's Gwendolyn Southin to be part of a workshop on researching historical mysteries. The writer knows a thing or two about cold cases, judging by her Margaret Spencer mystery series set in the 1950s and 1960s. Southin and the other 80-plus mystery authors will be working hard, taking part in a mystery trivia challenge and participating in workshops on character development like Villains, Sidekicks and Spear Carriers or Cozy Chicks and Hard-Boiled Dicks, the annual battle for genre supremacy.For more information on Bloody Words 2011, check out www.bloodywords2011.com
Fibreworks
It's a busy summer at FibreWorks near Madeira Park.In addition to the workshops led by renowned fibre artists, the exhibition schedule in the Gallery is an exciting variety of colour and textures in wood, paper, textiles and basketry. The current exhibition, The Game: Another Take on the Exquisite Corpse continues to amaze gallery visitors through to Sunday, June 12.
