Open house

4Cats Art Studio owner and curator Carrie Kimberley is very excited to invite the Coast community to drop by and experience the magic of 4Cats, located in Trail Bay Mall. The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Visitors can take a tour of the studio and take part in some fun 4Cats art activities including screen-printing and paint splattering. 4Cats Arts Studio is a professional art studio for kids aged two to 15 where they create imaginative pieces inspired by the work of famous artists. Music appreciation?

There will be an opportunity for adults to become familiar with string, woodwind, ?brass and percussion instruments over four Saturdays starting Feb. 5 at Roberts Creek Elementary School from 1 to 3 p.m. The series will start with strings, led by violinist Kathleen Hovey with a string ensemble; next is John Storer, clarinettist and ?bassoonist, with a woodwind quintet; the third session features trumpeter John Fredrickson with his jazz septet; and the final week will be percussionist Val Anderson.

There are a limited number of openings for this Capilano University Eldercollege course at $35 for all four sessions. Jam night

This Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Gibsons United Church, enjoy listening to and singing gospel music as Kelly Smit conducts a community gospel choir accompanied by a jazz trio of Ken Dalgleish on piano, Boyd Norman on bass and Tim Enns on percussion. Admission is by donation.

Indie night

Support independent rock music on the Sunshine Coast and hear three bands: Sinmobile, Get Away Van and BOAB this Saturday at the Sechelt Legion. Bands start at 9 p.m. There is free admission; non-members will sign the guest book.

Poet's Day

St. Brigid, the patron saint of poets, invites you to a Poetry CafĂ© on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. at the Arts Building in Gibsons. Special guest artist is Adelene da Soul Poet and you can read your own poetry by signing up at 7:45 p.m. for open mike. King Lear

The National Theatre of London presents King Lear by satellite at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. Derek Jacobi and Tony award winning Michael Grandage star.

Film

St. Hilda's Anglican in Sechelt presents the last film in its social justice documentary series, Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. A film by Bill Rose, This Dust of Words, unfolds as an achingly beautiful documentary about Elizabeth Wiltsee, a brilliant Stanford University graduate and promising writer.

Members of the newly re-opened Arrowhead Centre will be present to facilitate a discussion on how to be a caring community that celebrates people of all abilities, particularly people living with mental illness. Admission is by donation.

Environmental movie

On Friday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. at Gibsons United Church, the Green Team offers another entertaining "ecomentary" called No Impact Man. Laura Gabbert and Justin Schein's film provides both a front row seat to the experiment that became a national fascination and media sensation, and a behind the scenes look at the marital challenges that result from a radical lifestyle change. Admission is by donation.

Cover Me

Vocalist Trudi Diening presents a live recording and concert, Cover Me, on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt with the doors opening at 7:30 p.m. and concert at 8. Joining her will be Miles Black (piano), Rene Worst (upright bass) and Buff Allen (drums). This concert promises a truly warm and enjoyable evening. Tickets are $20, available at Strait Coffee or by e-mailing [email protected]. List the number of tickets you require and pay for them on arrival. Any tickets not claimed by 7:45 p.m. will be sold to the general public.

Adult acting

An adult acting workshop is offered by Driftwood Theatre School. Powerfully influenced by the practices of embodiment, instructor Sally Williams will introduce enlivening and potentially transformative explorations in a down-to-earth manner.

An introductory weekend session on Feb. 4 (7 to 9 p.m.) and Feb. 5 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at St. Bart's in Gibsons costs $125. For more information, call Sally at 604-886-1281.
