Paradigm, an exhibit by Liz, Jan and Hanelize de Beer, opens at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery on Thursday, Sept. 17 and runs to Sunday, Oct. 11. In parallel, in the Eve Smart Gallery, Gina Miller will be exhibiting paintings in a show titled Interior Geography. Both shows invite you to an opening reception on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. The de Beer collaboration and exhibit involves all three artists from one family. Altered landscapes were developed in back country locations, using the talent of each collaborator to its fullest extent. These altered landscapes are exposed to the elements and to the surprise of whoever finds them.
Interior Geography draws from a body of work that the Vancouver artist Gina Miller has produced since completing her BFA degree at Emily Carr University in 2012. Inspired by the BC landscape and the urban geography that surrounds Miller’s East Vancouver studio, these works feature organic shapes and nature-derived palettes from her sojourns in the Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast. Kishkan book launch
Patrin Szkandery, a young woman living in Victoria in the 1970s, restores an ancient quilt and travels to Czechoslovakia to trace her Roma history over the unsettling terrain of central Europe in the years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The pieced cloth proves to be both coded map and palimpsest (patrin) of her extended family’s nomadic wandering through Moravia. It’s the subject of the latest book by award-winning Pender Harbour author Theresa Kishkan, who will launch her book at the Arts Centre in Sechelt on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Correction
My apologies to Bill Terry, author of The Care-free Garden, Letting Nature Play Her Part, for muddling information in my review of this interesting book. Terry knows better than I do which plants can be found in the wild on the Sunshine Coast and which can be planted from seed to flourish in our growing conditions and he has documented it thoroughly in his book.
