Film society
The Sunshine Coast Film Society hosts a special season opening event on Jan. 10 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons.
There will be music by local musicians and the 2009 Canadian documentary Finding Farley will be screened. The film is about a young family's cross-Canada adventure to visit Canadian literary legend, Farley Mowat: they paddled, walked and sailed across the prairies, barren lands and Maritimes, stringing together the settings of many of Mowat's stories along the way.
Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.50 for single event or $7.50 members.
Wine art
Congratulations to Sechelt artist Yzabelle Delisle Milton who has had one of her images chosen from those of other B.C. artists for a wine bottle label in a contest put on by Calona Wines.
Milton entered one of her paintings, Aspen Boulevard, and was told last July that she was a finalist. Two weeks later, Calona announced that her label was the winner and would be used on their best selling chardonnay in the spring of 2011.
Black Cat
In the first screening of 2011, Black Cat Cinema presents the antidote to the rampant consumerism of the holiday season: the film, Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood. Advertising sells children on more than products and brands; it also promotes values and behaviours. The documentary shows on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Community Hall. Admission is $8. For more details, call 604-886-2780 or email [email protected].
Art talks
Local artist and professor emeritus Kristjana Gunnars presented an informative summary of her forthcoming discussion series, Understanding Contemporary Art Move-ments, to about 20 people at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery in December.
The art talk series will take place on the last Wednesday of every month beginning Jan. 26 at the gallery, and the first topic to be put into context will be landscape painting. Abstract art will be discussed in February.
In addition to painting, Gunnars has also taught creative writing and literary theory and has translated works on art and aesthetics. There may still be spaces available in the series. See www.gibsonspublicartgallery.ca for fees and registration.
