Hawaiian Hula
Dhyana Bartkow will be starting a new beginners Hawaiian Hula class this fall on Wednesdays to teach the basics of this beautiful art form through which our bodies, hearts and minds are nurtured by the expression of the many aspects of Aloha – love for ka Uhane Nui (Great Spirit), for the aina (nature), and for one another. She notes that Puna Kalama Dawson, her Kumu hula (teacher) of 15 years, will be coming from Kauai to teach hula for a week in May. Puna has an international following and reputation for her work as an Aloha ambassador. Bartkow’s classes will prepare you for the visit with a knowledge of the basic movements and terminology. If interested, let her know what times work for you: Wednesday morning, afternoon or evening class. Email a reply at [email protected] or phone 604-886-9737.
HA!Man
The HA!Man Show comes to the Gumboot Garden Café in Roberts Creek on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Janet Oxley writes that she first experienced the HA!man show in Seoul in 2004 and was delighted to learn that they would come to the Coast to perform between major shows in Kansas and Seattle. (See: www.hamanworld.com) François le Roux, aka the HA!Man, is a South African cellist and multi-artist who left the classical music world to embark on a journey of spontaneous music-making. A global network of support has grown over time that invites and accommodates the HA!Show. Joining him is Belgian actress and spoken word artist Joke Debaere. Like the term HA!, their performance can hardly be rationally defined. Phone 604-885-4218 for information.
