Dare to Be Heard tonight

Dare to be Heard, the final Artesia Coffeehouse of the season, is presented by the Coast Cultural Alliance at 8 p.m. tonight (May 27), at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

The evening promises an eclectic showcase of spoken word, featuring the WDOT Writing Collective (Caitlin Hicks, Nina Haedrich, JoAnne Bennison, Shelley Harrison Rae and Richard Austin), Dave Hallstead from VOICE on the Coast, Deanne Mineau, winner of the Winter Solstice Haiku Contest, writer and artistGeorge Connelland the legendary Terry Barker.

Sit back and listen or bring a short piece to read - if you dare. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 8. Come early and enjoy the artwork in the Doris Crowston Gallery, delectable treats by Trish Thompson and the slideshow of performance artists. Tickets are $10 at the door. Choirs tonight

A Cappella Strait and Choralations Children's and Youth Choirs present Songs of Work and Play tonight (May 27) at 8 p.m. at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and youths.

This weekend?

The Coast Community Orchestra is holding its end of season concert, Around the World in Eighty Minutes, a mixed media presentation featuring music and visuals. There are two performances: on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall.

Also this Saturday, enjoy a celebration organized by the Sunshine Coast Museum to mark the 125th anniversary of the arrival of George Gibson and his family on our shores. Starting at 12:30 p.m. there will be a historical re-enactment, using the talents of local performers, at Armours Beach. The Gibson family will then travel up to the museum. Tea, cake and refreshments will be served along with a slideshow on the history of Gibsons that afternoon at the museum.

Mellowtones

Raising the Roof withthe Mellowtones takes place this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to raise funds for St. Mary's Hospital expansion project. Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door. Come at6:30 p.m. for cake and coffee, with show time at 7:30 at theSechelt Legion Hall. Call Nikki Weber at 604-740-0933 for more. The show is offered again on Sunday in Madeira Park at the Performance Centre at 1:30 p.m.

First Nations show

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is pleased to announce that Jessica Casey and Candace Campo will curate an exhibition of First Nations work that will be shown at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Arts Centre in Sechelt. The exhibition opens June 1 and runs through June 26. There will be a reception to celebrate the opening at 7 p.m. on June 1. Everyone is welcome. Watch for details on the website at www.scartscouncil.com.

Show of Respect

A body of work depicting how children suffer from global warfare is on show again. Painted by Pender Harbour artist Helen Broadfoot, A Show of Respect had its first exhibition here on the Coast, and has travelled extensively ever since.

Right now the exhibit is at a castle in Barcelona, Spain, for the seventh conference of the International Network of Museums for Peace. From there, it will be going to The Hague in the Netherlands. Broadfoot is happy the paintings are still doing good work in their message for peace. Two peace museums, one in Norway and the other in the UK, have also shown an interest in the exhibition.

Family dance

On Friday, June 3, at7 p.m. at Davis Bay Hall, join the Knotty Dotters for a family dance of African music. The Dottersare seven women who play joyous, energetic dance music with interlocking rhythms on marimbas, hoshos and drum in the traditional style of Zimbabwe, with a bit of influence from Oregon and the Sunshine Coast.

Kunda African Culture Musicand Dance special guests Kocassale Dioubate, Sasha Belle and friends will also perform. In African culture "kunda" means family, so they are a perfect fit for this family evening.

Tickets are $5 and available at Gaia's Fair Trade, MELOmania, Strait Music and at the door. Come for an early evening of family, fun, frolicand food. There may even be instruments available for sale. Proceeds of the dance go to support African familycharities.

Chat drama society

The Chatelech Drama Society presents entertainment for the whole family with Aladdin and his Magic Lamp for two shows next week. Performances are Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4, at 7 p.m. at the Chatelech Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale starting today (May 27) at the school and are $8 for adults and $5 for students and children.
