Sechelt Arts Festival continues with a ticketed flamenco and tap dance performance from the musical Grease this Friday, Oct. 13, at Raven’s Cry Theatre at 8 p.m.
Also a special dance workshop will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14 for $10 at the Coast Academy of Dance studio, and the popular Emerging Sounds all-ages show of youthful musicians at the shíshálh Nation Community Hall on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.

Coffee House
This Friday, Oct. 13, enjoy a coffee house at the School of Music in Madeira Park. Hear Katrina Bishop, popular singer/songwriter with her new, original material, Ken Dunn and Anna Green and their original folk-inspired acoustic music and Chelsea Rubin, a talented young vocalist. Coffee and goodies sold at intermission. Doors open at 7 p.m., music at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by a suggested $10 donation.
54-40
Tickets go on sale this Friday, Oct. 13, for the iconic group 54-40 who will be performing at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt on March 17, 2018.
54-40 Unplugged: Songs and Stories is an intimate reimagining of their greatest hits featuring original arrangements of violin, guitar, banjo, mandolin and more. In between songs the band engages with the audience, sharing stories from their 30+ years together.
In January 2016 they released La Difference: A History Unplugged that features ten of their greatest songs. 54-40’s hits include Baby Ran, She La, Casual Viewin’, One Gun, Since When, Nice to Luv You and Lies to Me. In April 2017, the band was inducted twice into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame at both the 17th annual Independent Music Awards and the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards. They are currently preparing their 2017 release titled Keep On Walking (El Mocambo Records). Natural dyes
From the various plants to harvest, to the variety of colours you can get from just one plant, natural dyes are diverse. In a workshop at the Arts Building at 464 South Fletcher, Gibsons, you can explore an exciting way to use natural dyes by mixing natural plant powders with natural dye extracts to thicken the dyes so you can stamp, stencil and silkscreen with them. The workshop is on Oct. 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Register at arts building.org
Braathen Trio
The Kristian Braathen trio will be performing live jazz at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Joining Braathen will be two of Vancouver’s finest: Nick Peck on piano (from London, U.K.) and Paul Rushka, acoustic bass. Advance tickets at www.brownpapertickets.ca are $20 adults/$15 students and seniors; door sale tickets are $25. This is a small venue, so tickets at the door based on availability.
Mozart
Mozart’s Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) is the latest opera broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera to the Raven’s Cry Theatre screen. Music director James Levine conducts Tony award winner Julie Taymor’s production of Mozart’s masterpiece on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Raven’s Cry in Sechelt. Raphael
In the Gallery series at the Raven’s Cry Theatre, Sechelt, the film Raphael: Lord of the Arts will be shown on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. One of the greatest Renaissance artists, Raphael was widely celebrated and yet not many know his story. Phone 604-885-4597 for tickets.
Zombie walk
The tenth year of the Gibsons Zombie Walk is on Sunday, Oct. 15. Meet at Dougall Park bandshell at 2 p.m., walking to George Gibson park in Lower Gibsons for a group photo. Donation to join is non-perishable items for the food bank.
Fretless
The 2017 Juno Award winners The Fretless return to Gibsons on Wednesday, Oct. 18 for a night of progressive fiddle tunes at the Heritage Playhouse. High energy string arrangements, captivating melodies, and a blend of tradition and exploration define the original sound created by The Fretless. The band members are from across Canada and the U.S.; they are Trent Freeman, Karrnnel Sawitsky and Ben Plotnick on fiddles, with Eric Wright holding down the low end on cello. On Oct. 18 doors open at 7 p.m. and show is at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse. Tickets are at www.share-there.com.
The Fretless are sticking around on the Coast until Sunday, Oct. 22 when they will appear again as part of the Pender Harbour Music Society’s concert series. The show is at 2 p.m. at the School of Music in Madeira Park. Tickets are $25; see penderharbourmusic.ca for outlets.
Creek time
Creative in the Creek offers their fun and supportive space for performers to share their creativity on Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek.
It’s hosted by Jess Stephens Whale filling in for Siobhan Brown and David Roche. Admission is by donation. This month it features: Aliya with an original song and Ted and Gayle MacDonald who will perform classic Métis fiddling and dancing. Sarah Tompkins gives another story fresh from her fertile imagination. Lance Leeson and Chloe McKinnon will be singing a collection of original songs.
Doors open at 7 p.m., show time is at 7:30 p.m.
Honours for Magnanensi
The 2017 City of Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Awards include 25 of the best and brightest creative minds. Awards are given in a variety of disciplines, from performing and visual arts to literary and culinary arts.
Each honouree in the studio and performing arts categories is invited to select an emerging artist in their discipline who also receives an award for demonstrating the promise of the next generation.
The honours in the category of music go to sound artist Giorgio Magnanensi from Roberts Creek (who often performs in Vancouver) and he has nominated emerging artist Stefan Maier.
