Nine writers based in Roberts Creek will participate in an evening of readings on Saturday.

The event, organized by writer Jane Covernton, is called Think Globally, Read Locally. When Covernton was ready to launch her third novel, The Modern Age, she wanted to include her community, Roberts Creek, where she now lives full-time, after being a summer visitor for 60 years. Covernton believes passionately in the value of local writing.

Writers include Heather Conn, David Roche, Caitlin Hicks and Robin Wheeler. Join them for a fun evening of words in a variety of genres from poetry and drama to creative nonfiction. Each will read for 10 minutes with refreshment break and time to peruse new books. The event runs from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Gumboot. Admission is by donation with proceeds going to International Pen.

Photography workshop

Digital imaging is becoming part of our daily life, says artist Diego Samper, who will be leading Photosynthesis, a hands-on workshop structured around photography as a tool of exploration and the fine art of observation.

This one-day workshop on Saturday will start with a brief introduction to photography and the creative process with a review of your images followed by a field trip. The emphasis will be on the creation of significant images, photographs that do not require any further intervention. The day finishes with a critical review.

Workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Gibsons. For information contact [email protected] or call 604-886-3353.
