Bharata Natyam is a classical Indian dance recital entitled In Praise of the Divine Feminine with Jayalakshmi Eshwar of New Delhi, India, and presented by Shakti Dance and the New Moon Festival Society on Sunday, July 11, at 3 p.m. at St. Bart's Church in Gibsons, in memory of Lois Kennedy.

Eshwar is a master performer and scholar of this classical dance form (see photo next page). One of eight major classical dances in India, it originated over 2,000 years ago and was performed in the temples of South India during religious ceremonies.

On Saturday, the group hosts a workshop on how to wrap a sari (all proceeds to benefit the society) at 5 p.m. followed by an artist's reception at 7 (with Indian vegetarian dinner) at Whispering Cedars Retreat. Two choirs perform this Sunday - Viva la Bella Czech Children's Choir in Madeira Park at 2 p.m. and Aurora, Young Adelaide Voices, at Gibsons United Church at 7 p.m.

Showcase of the Per-forming Arts continues at the Heritage Playhouse this weekend with a dance performance tonight (Friday), Celtic Night on Saturday and the Billy Hillpicker Band on Sunday. Music documentary

In an effort to widen the scope at the Doris Crowston Gallery in Sechelt, the Sunshine Coast Arts Council is showing the music documentary RIP: A Remix Manifesto, on Thursday, July 15, at 7 p.m. with a conversation following the film. The documentary explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. Admission is by donation, which helps the Arts Council put on such events. For more, check out the Arts Council's Facebook page.

Art classes

The winner of the Canada Day draw for a filled picnic basket at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery's Bag of Books sale was Michele Stobie of Gibsons. The GPAG offers children's art classes this summer.

From July 19 to 23 teacher Sophia leads kids ages five to eight from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and the nine to 12-year-olds from 10:45 a.m. to noon. The fee of $30 includes all materials. Phone 604-886-0531 to register.

MS play

Playwright and performer Jan Einarson gave several shows on the Coast of her original play about Multiple Sclerosis called My Left leg is a DragLiterally. She now takes the show on the road in B.C. through her employer the Good Samaritans (Christenson Village). In addition, she will perform two gigs in Alberta through local MS chapters. Einarson has recently been approached by the MS support group on the Coast to speak at one of their meetings. Find out more about her journey on www.grainofsaltproductions.com.

Photography show

Leighdon Studio Gallery in Vancouver presents a new exhibit running from now until July 30 with an opening reception tonight, (Friday). It features work by former Coast photographer William P. Stock - metallic paper on aluminum. The book, Artists of British Columbia-Volume I, which features many Coast artists, is on sale at the gallery and on the Coast at Talewind Books, Motoko's Gallery in Garden Bay, or at Gift of the Eagle in Gibsons. Photos at 101

For the month of July, 101 Office Supply in Sechelt is featuring photography by Jim Brown. The artist has been shooting for 10 years documenting his impressions of the Sunshine Coast, and has recently taken courses from the Focal Point school in Vancouver. For this show, he has provided dozens of small and medium-sized images, all hand-framed.

Commotion

Commotion on the Ocean takes place on Saturday, July 17 on Gambier Island. Enjoy an outdoor concert at the Community Centre starting at 2:30 p.m. and running until 9. Nearly Neil and ABBA Cadabra are the headline acts and they will provide their own tribute to the 10th anniversary of this event. Also playing are The Hot Moonbeams, Cale's Collective from Vancouver with Jim & Caley Honeywell backed by the Gambier Band. Bring sunscreen, lawn chair, blanket and dancing shoes. A beer and wine garden for adults plus food concessions are available. Special departures of the Stormaway IV passenger ferry from Langdale will start at 2 and run until 3:15. There will be extra sailings on the return trip until 9 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and free for children under six. Proceeds support local projects.
