Original illustrations of many Canadian children's books will be on display at the Doris Crowston Art Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre March 12 to April 6.

Original illustrations of many Canadian children's books will be on display at the Doris Crowston Art Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre March 12 to April 6.

The travelling exhibit of original art work will be visiting the Coast thanks to the Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP).

The pieces of art in the exhibit are donated by the artists and are on loan for exhibition purposes. The Sunshine Coast Arts Council (SCAC) and partner organizations, the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts, School District No. 46 and the Sechelt Public Library, are sponsoring the exhibit, as part of the newly formed Celebration of Authors, Books and Children, launched in November 2007.

The collection consists of 39 pieces of original art by 32 illustrators from across Canada. All of the artwork has been published in children's books.

The CANSCAIP collection offers the public an opportunity to enjoy the richness of the original artwork and to appreciate the wide variety of media and techniques used by the artists. Watercolour, pen and ink, acrylics, tempera, gouache, pencil, colour pencil, pastels, oils, plasticine, collage and mixed media are represented in the exhibit as well as many artistic styles - from realistic to cartoons. Everyone is invited to attend the opening reception at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Wednesday, March 12, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sandy Buck, recipient of the Gillian Lowndes Award from the SCAC in 2007, will be in attendance with one of her marvelous puppets.
