Celebrate with Arbutus Sounds concert

To celebrate their 10th year as a member of Sweet Adelines International, the Arbutus Sounds Chorus are putting on a show. The concert is more than just singing in their barbershop style; it is a musical comedy called Thanks for the Music.

A quartet from Vancouver, Over The Moon, will join them - not just any quartet, but the best quartet in the Sweet Adelines region.

The two shows will be held on Saturday, March 27 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons - one a matinée at 2 and an evening show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Gaia's Fair Trade and Hallmark Cards in Gibsons and at MonkeyChips in Sechelt.

Celtic kitchen

A Celtic kitchen party is presented by the Coast String Fiddlers on Saturday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7) at the Madeira Park Community Hall. Adults only, please.

Tickets are $20 each at Bluewaters Books in Madeira Park Plaza, John Henry's in Garden Bay and Sechelt Visitors Centre, and include gourmet desserts, tea and coffee. The show promises toe tapping music, singing, dancing and lots of fun. It's a fundraiser for the Coast String Fiddlers forthcoming trip to Aberdeen, Scotland.

Remix workshop

Musician Steve Wright will hold a sound and music workshop for teens aged 13 to 18 at the Arts Building in Gibsons today (Friday) from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will explore sound using turntables, sound effects, mixers and various re-wired audio toys. They are encouraged to bring their iPODs and DVDs to put into the remix. Fee is a $10 sliding scale. Information is at the website: artsbuilding.org or email [email protected].

Reading series

In the continuing reading series at Gibsons Public Art Gallery, plan to hear the following authors: on Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m. Dan Bouman, author/environmentalist, reads from his book The People's Water. Duo

The Suncoast Concert Band (part of the S.C. Com-munity Orchestra) and the Suncoast Singers team up for a show tonight (Friday) at 8 p.m. at St. John's United Church in Davis Bay and again on Sunday, March 28, same place, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Music

Catch musician Luci Herder with Larrie Cook and The Bluesmasters at the Gibsons Legion at 7 p.m. this Saturday. Everyone welcome with no cover charge.

Opera

On Saturday, March 27, at 10 a.m. the Raven's Cry Theatre and the NY Metropolitan Opera present Hamlet, live by satellite and in high definition. Simon Keenlyside and Marlis Petersen bring their extraordinary skills to two of Shakespeare's characters. The show lasts approximately three hours and 43 minutes. Bring your lunch. Ticket prices are $22 general and $18 senior/child, available at the door.

This Land

Film-maker Dianne Whelan of Pender Harbour engaged a full house audience at the S.C. Film Society's show last Monday by recounting her adventures in Canada's Arctic and screening her documentary, This Land. Her entertaining book about the trip, This Vanishing Land, is available from Caitlin Press.

Arts Centre

Between House and Home, a mixed media show from Sonja Kobrehel currently on at the Doris Crowston Gallery in Sechelt, closes on March 28. The Young People's Own Show' representing work from the Coast's elementary school students' opens March 31.

Arts and Ideas

The Gambier Island Com-munity Centre Society's Arts and Ideas series continues on April 3 with award-winning architect Richard Henriquez speaking on architecture, sculpture and narrative. The events are held on Saturday afternoons and are accessible by passenger ferry from Langdale. Earlybird writers

The former Powell River Festival of Writers has grown up into the Powell River Writers Conference for its seventh anniversary April 30 and May 1.
