Music in the Landing will again present a B.C. Day show in Winegarden Park, Monday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with The Ranters, a rock cover band from Roberts Creek with Rob Marion, Dave Morgan, Kevin Stromlaw, Brock O'Byrne, Laurie O'Byrne and Kevin Cafferky.
Song Circle
The members of the African Song Circle that will perform in Gibsons on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., sing together for the love of it. They are also raising funds through their busking for Isecheno village in Kenya, Africa. They have already raised funds for a reading program, assistance for Mama Henrietta, who provides cooking services for orphans and who is currently undergoing a medical crisis, assistance for a not-yet-sustainable agricultural program, an honorarium for a teacher and help for young women and men to attend secondary school and university.
Meet the author
Gardener and Himalayan blue poppy specialist Bill Terry will be on hand at Woods Showcase in Sunnycrest Mall this Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. to meet the public and sign copies of his book, Blue Heaven. Terry has also published a gorgeous calendar, Poppies from the Roof of the World.
Wheeler event
A Celebration of Community in support of Robin Wheeler is on for this coming Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the Roberts Creek Hall - alongside Farm Gate Market - from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m. Come for the silent auction, music, food and stories. Blade Runners will donate 25 per cent of proceeds from tool and knife sharpening to the fund. If you can't make it to the event, you can donate on Robin's page at www.ediblelandscapes.ca. Let's help this gardener, food activist and community organizer through the winter as she recovers from a serious illness.
Artists on the road?
Four local artists are taking their talents off the Coast temporarily: Brian Romer has a painting in the Showcase Exhibition at the Ferry Building Gallery, 1414 Argyle Ave. in West Vancouver, with an opening reception tonight (July 29) from 4:30 to 6 p.m., as part of the Harmony Arts Festival. He'll also be doing a plein air painting demo outside the gallery on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, performer John Conway has taken his alter ego as The Green Man on the road to the Discovery Music Festival in Bella Coola this week.
Artist Jan Poynter has been in Haida Gwaii this month working on a community project for the Village of Queen Charlotte, where she has been painting a public art street utility box (as she has done in Gibsons and Sechelt) as well as teaching art workshops.
And glass artisan Miyuki Shinkai will be heading for the PNE this year as one of the artists invited to take over a shipping container and use it as a mini-gallery to showcase her work.
Roving artists
The Roving Artists will hold their Retrospective Show in the Arts Building at 464 S. Fletcher Rd. in Gibsons, on Friday, Aug. 5, with an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. The show runs again on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are invited to drop in and view a selection of this group's work.
Craft Fair
The 24th Annual Hackett Park Summer Arts & Crafts Fair is on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hackett Park on Trail Avenue in Sechelt.
There will be more than 80 vendors selling their work at one of B.C.'s larger art and craft fairs during this fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Arts Council, which has supported artists, artisans and craftspeople on the Coast since 1966.
They request a donation of $3 for adults and $2 for seniors and youth. Children 12 and under are welcome to attend with adult accompaniment. Look for live entertainment by local musicians, actors and puppeteers, a face-painter, the Rotary Club of Sechelt food concession, along with Ty's Fine Foods & Bistro, and Buddy's at the Beach.
Flag show
Gibsons Landing is operating under a colourful display of banners, flags and hanging baskets these days. Last year's banners, painted by local artists, were scrubbed and touched up last spring then hung again in May. They will come down in the fall and the artists will have first dibs on purchasing their own banners with the leftover banners auctioned off early in 2012. The prayer flags that Zocalo owner Joann Hetherington brought back from Bali will remain flying to enliven the area. Currently they are adorning Marine Drive and Molly's Lane; they bring a nice energy to the area.
