This Saturday, April 23, will be a night of world rhythms and dance-worthy vibes when Beats Without Borders Goes Coastal at the Roberts Creek Community Hall. Unfortunately Faeries and Fools Costume Carnival is taking a hiatus this year -so, if you were waiting until then to dance, wait no longer. The group is a collective of established DJs who have been producing successful monthly shows in Vancouver. Working with big name artists, the DJs are Lady Ra, Nils and Tarun for a night of eclectic world beats. Art show?

Viva La Mama is an outdoors sculpture and jewellery show opening today (April 22) and running until May 8 at the Rock 'n' Art Gallery at 127Clark Rd. in Gibsons. The show celebrates family around Easter and moms on Mother's Day. View the show daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. or from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. Opera

Strauss's opera Capriccio, starring Renee Fleming, is featured in HD live by satellite from the New York Metropolitan Opera at the Raven's Cry Theatre this Saturday at 10 a.m. Call 604-885-4597 to confirm times.

Easter weekend

On Easter Sunday, the incomparable entertainer Linda Jones returns to the Gibsons Legion for an Easter bunny hop, Easter egg hunt and Easter bonnet parade. Everyone is welcome from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.?

Also on Sunday, The Pomegranate Poetry Showcase presents an incredible line-up from Ottawa's spoken word scene. Hosted by Coast resident Jonathan Appleseed, the show features slam poetry champions. Four authors

Meet four authors on Wednesday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sechelt Arts Centre. Nightwood author Joe Denham will be launching his new novel, The Year of Broken Glass.

Denham lives with his wife and two children in Halfmoon Bay and works as a commercial fisherman in coastal B.C.

Nightwood poet Kevin McNeilly will be reading from his new book Embouchure. Caitlin Press poets Adam Pottle and Ursula Vaira will also be reading from their new books. Pottle is an edgy, emerging young poet from Saskatchewan who is hearing impaired and writes about the world of disability in Beautiful Mutants.

In And See What Happens, Vaira writes about three transformative journeys she took through the rugged landscape of the B.C. wilderness. Each will read for 10 minutes or so, refreshments will be served, and books will be for sale by Talewind.

Oscar fundraiser

The family of little Oscar Dorval needs your help and support. Parents Pat Dorval, recently seen in the play Wake Up and Smell the Coffee, and Angie Cruikshank are being positive about the health of their son Oscar who has recently had a tumour removed from his kidney. A fundraiser on Friday, April 29, from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Benjamins Café in Sunnycrest Mall will help allay financial challenges. Money raised will go towards keeping his family with Oscar in Vancouver while he's in hospital. Check for tickets by calling Benjamin's at 604-886-1646.

Carnival Era

Carnival Era, the dynamic musical duo of Ross Hastings and Chelsea Crawford, will perform at the Heritage Playhouse on Saturday, April 30, from 8 to 11 p.m. Special guests include Celso Machado, percussionist; Edmund Arceo, tenor; and Chelsea Sleep, violin. Fifty per cent of the profits from the evening will go towards Oscar Dorval. Tickets are on sale at Gaia's, Hallmark, MELOmania and the Sechelt Visitor Centre.

Music festival

The Festival of Per-forming Arts events for the next week are: April 26 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - percussion, woodwinds, brass solos atSt. Hilda's Church; April 27 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - bands and ensembles category at Chatelech Theatre; and on April 28 at 2 p.m.- plucked strings competitors perform at St. Hilda's Church. Spring Fling

On April 30, the Halfmoon Bay Community School and Welcome Beach Community Association are sponsoring aFamily Fun Spring Fling at the Welcome Beach Hall. This isa fundraiser for Ann Mile's Ride for Cancer and for the hall. Enjoy a barbecued burger platter (or hot dog) and beverage for just $10, children under 13 only $5. Music and fun are offered. Play Name that Trivia for prizes at a $5 donation fee to play. Dinner is at 6 p.m.; trivia starts at 7. Tickets are at Halfmoon Bay Community School or Pastimes in Sechelt. Coffeehouse

Music Makers will hold their fun Coffeehouse at the Davis Bay Hall on April 30 at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7). The show features the Family, Gospel and Adult Choirs, the Guitar Gang, Tuesday Fiddlers and soloists Reg and Lynne and Definitely Diva. Coffee, tea and goodies will be available.
