Film night
The monthly film night at the Arts Building is tonight (Feb. 11) and will show Sita Sings the Blues, an ancient East Indian tale in animation by Nina Paley. Doors open at 7, film starts at 7:15 p.m. Cost is $2 for all ages. See www.artsbuilding.org for more details.
Vocal Intent
The singing group Vocal Intent presents Contrasts and Companions, songs for six voices, this Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Living Faith Lutheran Church in Davis Bay. The program is eclectic, and mostly a cappella, and the six voices are: Sylvain Brochu, Tom Kellough, Jen MacInnes, Elizabeth Scott and Tina Wesseling (as well as Jon Eriksson, who is having voice problems, therefore is not singing at this concert, so Alec Tebbutt will sit in). Musical sale
The best garage sale on the Sunshine Coast takes place this Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. You can listen to the Suncoast Concert Band in rehearsal while shopping for bargains or baked goods. See you at the Roberts Creek Elementary School gym.
Valentine fundraiser
The Society for the Preservation of Arts, Culture and Environment (SPACE) presents Red All Over this Saturday, Feb. 12, featuring three rooms with three distinct themes from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., all located at 626 Shaw Rd. in Gibsons (behind the PetroCan). SPACE will be doing upgrades to its community gardens as a venue for summer night markets and an Upper Gibsons Music Festival. Saturday's 19-plus event starts at 6 p.m. with the chocolate affair at Jordao Studios where food vendors serve up Mediterranean cuisine. At 8 p.m. go to the cocktails and tease event at the Beachhouse Show Lounge for a fashion show featuring local designers, then a naughty night market and a burlesque dance and entertainment at 10:30. Tickets for $18 are available at Cloud 9 Boutique, MELOmania, Beachhouse Show Lounge, Healingscents and Jordao Studio. Proceeds from the event will go to the community garden project. Concert
The Suncoast Singers, under music director Joy McLeod, will perform John Rutter's Magnificat at two concerts. Rutter is a contemporary British composer renowned particularly for his choral music. Magnificat is a celebration of the Virgin Mary with words taken from Luke's gospel. The music varies from outbursts of joy in the opening and closing choruses to a delicate poem in praise of the Virgin and a humble plea for mercy.
The concerts are on Friday, Feb. 18, 7:30 p.m. at St. John's United Church in Davis Bay, and on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2 p.m. at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt. For more, call 604-740-3781.
Soul Talk
Natasha, the psychic, has been hosting a series of Soul Talks at Wheatberries Bakery, 822 Gibsons Way. The next one, entitled Bringing Heaven to Earth, is on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is by donation. RSVP to [email protected] to reserve your seat.
Black history
Black History month is celebrated on Feb. 18 and 19 at 8 p.m. at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. Makosso Village presents The Mother Goddess of Africa by Jean Pierre Makosso with drama students from Chatelech and Elphinstone, Embers Moore, Brittany Robertson and special guest Eagle Child.
Black History month on the Coast is about cultural diversity. At the request of the high school students who worked hard on a school project researching Black History and putting their ideas into words, Makosso co-ordinated their work into this creative event. Anagram
Anna Lumiere and Graham Ord, the duo known as Anagram, have returned from Europe and will perform a homecoming concert on Friday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. at the Gumboot Café in Roberts Creek. John Rule on drums and Boyd Norman on bass make for a musical evening.
