Pender Harbour artists want to remind the public about their open house this weekend Oct. 8 to 10.

This is the third ArtWave for these artists, and this time features 11 galleries and studios including the Harbour Gallery, Copper Sky Gallery, Fibreworks Gallery, the Piecefull Glass Canvas, Flying Anvil Studio & Gallery, Windows Gallery, Gibson Fine Art Creations, Motoko's Original Art Studio and Gallery, Blue Orca Studio, Bluff Hollow Cement Works and Geopia.

Music at Lina's

The restaurant formerly known as Sailor Dan's in Gibsons is relaunching as Lina's Lounge & Grill. Blaine Dunaway performs this evening, Friday, at 8 p.m., and on Saturday, Verna Chan and Paul Steenhuis take to the stage. Call the restaurant for reservations: 604-886-9119. There will be a gala grand opening on Friday, Oct. 22.

Danceworks

Danceworks competitive hip hop team, Outburst, had an excellent year in 2010 and represented the Sunshine Coast well. The group of eight youth aged 15 to 18 placed third at the Peak Invitational Dance Competition in April, improved to a silver performance at the Shine Dance Festival in May and finished off the year strong with a first place in stage dance at the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts.

The group plans to compete in up to six competitions in the next year and is fundraising to help make this goal a reality. Their first fundraiser is this Saturday at the Marketplace IGA in Gibsons with a barbecue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Wagner opera

This Saturday, Raven's Cry Theatre presents Wag-ner's Das Rheingold, Live in HD - a new production.

Two unparalleled artists join forces to create a groundbreaking new ring for the New York Met opera: maestro James Levine and director Robert Lepage. Das Rheingold is the prologue to Wagner's epic drama. Run time is three hours 15 minutes and starts at 10 a.m.

Day of Revenge

Sechelt author Deanna Proach is set to launch her new book, Day of Revenge, at the Rockwood Centre on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. Proach grew up in Sechelt. After graduating from Elphinstone Secondary School she completed her BA degree with a major in history. In Day of Revenge, members of the landed nobility, Samuel La Font and Emmanuel d' LeVasque find themselves on the wrong side of the French revolution. Under the shadow of the guillotine, these Royalists wage war against the revolutionaries, at risk to both their own lives and the lives of their families. The book follows multiple characters on both sides of the conflict as they navigate revolutionary France in this novel full of love, adventure, and intrigue. Holiday Faire

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is calling for interested vendors to submit applications for a space at the 2010 Christmas Holiday Faire, Nov. 27 to 28 at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt. Deadline for applications is Friday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m. See www.scartscouncil.com for the application form and further details.

Book launch

Author Elizabeth Blakely is holding a book launch for her latest work, The Goddess Lives, on Friday, Oct. 15, at the Arts Centre in Sechelt. Doors open at 7 p.m. All are invited to a talk, reading and refreshments.

101 Art

For the month of October, One 0 One Office Supply in Sechelt is pleased to show paintings by Nefri Lyske and Pat Walsh. Both are active in the Pender Harbour art community and have shown extensively locally as well as on the mainland. Their artwork can regularly be found hanging in the Harbour Gallery, and Lyske operates Mountain View Studio in Secret Cove, where she also offers classes in drawing, oil and watercolours. Lyske and Walsh are both inspired by their natural surroundings and have supplied some 30 canvasses of both older work and newer.

Fibreworks

The current show at Fibreworks Gallery, Surface Design - Alaska, continues in the gallery until Nov. 7.

On Saturday and Sun-day, Oct. 16 and 17, Fibre-works holds a workshop with Julie Pongrac entitled Simple Complex Colour using mushrooms - a great opportunity to explore colours using local mushrooms. Taylor to Russia

By this time next week, drummer Barry Taylor will be in Poland starting another tour of the Baltics with the band DarkBlueWorld, and this time they will go to Russia as well.
