Blaine's guest
Tonight, Friday, at 8 p.m. Coast musician Blaine Dunaway makes music with jazz pianist Ron Johnston at Sailor Dan's Restaurant in Gibsons. Whether on fiddle, trumpet, vocals or his uniquely voiced "chin cello," Dunaway is always a delight to hear. He is hosting a regular musical soirée every second Friday night.
Love Letters
Dear Sue Beer and George Grafton: Liked your delightful performance in Love Letters at the Heritage Playhouse in that gentle, well-scripted play by A.R.Gurney. Imagine - we got to know your two characters by listening to their letters to one another over the years. I must say the first act was a little frustrating, though - each character seemed blind to the other's affection. When would they clue in? But the second act sizzled - and what a sad ending. Keep going, you two, in your roles as actors, and you especially, Sue, as director. Regards, Jan. P.S. I hear you're performing again at the Arts Centre in Sechelt this weekend, Friday and Saturday at 8, with a matinée at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Film Society
The SC Film Society kicks off its season on Monday, Sept. 13, with the film I Killed My Mother (in French with English sub-titles) by director/writer Xavier Dolan. One of the most talked about films of 2009, it's a French Canadian coming of age story about a young, gay man. For this special event, doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a wine and cheese reception and to allow you to buy your membership. The series runs at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons at 7:30 p.m. For reservations and information, see www.scfs.ca or phone 604-886-1579. Music Makers is gearing up for a great season. The family choir for children aged seven plus and their adults is new this season and starts Sept. 20. This is a great opportunity for generations to sing, learn, laugh and play together. Also beginning soon, the adult choir, a fun loving group with a great sound, will be learning some new gospel and jazz tunes. No experience is necessary.
The preschool classes with Sara Munson are as popular as ever. Group guitar for kids aged eight plus is also new this year as well as a gospel evening once a month on a Sunday night with the first one on Sept. 26. And a big treat for string fans, Michelle Bruce is teaching Suzuki violin for kids five plus. For more, visit www.music-makers.ca.
