The Rakish Angles, a well known and exciting local group of excellent musicians playing instrumental old time/Latin/Gypsy/ bluegrass, have just been nominated for the Western Canadian Music Award Instrumental Album of the Year. Night shows

A Cirque du Lumiere style event at the ArtBarn, touted as the little antique barn with big contemporary art, took place last Saturday night, Aug. 14.

Artist Mardi was the exotic and gracious hostess. The extravaganza unveiled her installation, Maiden Flight, to an appreciative guest crowd of more than 100. Music, lights and sound effects accompanied the revelation of a modern interpretation of a raven-headed, bejewelled goddess in an ethereal ball gown. She arrived in style on a flying motorcycle accompanied by her entourage of four-and-twenty helixing blackbirds. Other visually mouth-watering artworks included a 200-kilogram spinning steel sculpture in progress and the artist's compelling body of work on two floors of the barn. An encore presentation/wine and cheese reception takes place tomorrow (Saturday) from 8 to 11 p.m. The ArtBarn is located at 2212 Oldershaw Rd. in Roberts Creek. Call 604-886-2959 for details.

This weekend

Get ready for a two festival weekend.

The Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival runs Aug. 20 to 22, and the Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival (www.gibsonslandingfibrearts.com) offers workshops and a juried exhibition at Elphinstone Secondary School. Many other events at this time celebrate fabric arts: check out the display at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery, for example. You don't have to be a festival participant to join in with the free festivities in the Landing this Saturday, Aug. 21.

FibreWorks

At FibreWorks Studio & Gallery, the current exhibition, Synthesis, a challenge by Canadian members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates, continues until Sept. 12. For further information or to register for any of the workshops offered by renowned fibre artists, call 604-883-2380. The gallery and studio are located in the yurts on Highway 101 near Garden Bay.

Song circle

No matter how good or how rusty your voice, you are welcome to take part in the weekly Wednesday evening song circle in Dougall Park in Gibsons (or in Gibsons United Church during inclement weather). Camaraderie and many international songs are all part of the fun. Singing begins at 7 p.m. Bring a chair, if you like, and a money donation for the group's project, a primary school in western Kenya. Questions? Contact Karen Stein at 604-886-9319.

Garlic news

A new festival will launch next weekend as the Pender Harbour Lions Club hosts their inaugural Garlic Festival Aug. 28 to 29 at the Lion's Club Park near Garden Bay. It's a family fun event with lots going on for folks of every age including garlicky foods, organic produce, artisans and vendors, wonderful musicians, horseback rides for kids, a bouncy castle, face painting, horseshoe tournament, and much more, with the sponsorship of local businesses. See www.penderharbourgarlicfestival.ca for more details.
