A salute to Howard White

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council will host A White Evening, a salute to Harbour Publishing's Howard White, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 8 p.m.

White has been honoured for his achievements nationally and provincially, and it's time we celebrated him here on the Coast. Howard's many honours include the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, the Order of British Columbia, an honourary doctorate from the University of Victoria and, most recently, the Order of Canada - remarkable distinctions for someone raised in coastal logging camps. But then, he went on to build a major regional publishing house in the forest.

As master of ceremonies, writer and editor Shane McCune (not, as first announced, Patrick Lane) will introduce some of White's friends and associates, including John Pass, Andreas Schroeder and Daniel Francis, who will offer tributes during an evening of conversation, wine and snacks. On behalf of the Sunshine Coast Regional District, Pender Harbour director John Rees will present a letter of congratulations in recognition of White's achievements and his extraordinary contributions to the life of the Coast.

With White's blessing, this event is a benefit for the Arts Council's author readings program. The $20 admission includes a glass of bubbly to toast the guest of honour. Tickets are available at Coast Books, WindSong Gallery and the Arts Centre.
