The classic story of Romeo and Juliet will get a new twist when Caravan World Rhythms presents the Karen Flamenco Dance Company in Romeo and Juliet on Saturday, April 9, at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.
The evening will be a flamenco retelling of the tragic Shakespearean love story.
After last summer's three sold out Vancouver performances, the Karen Flamenco Dance Company is taking the show on the road with a spectacular cast of 20 performers. Set in turn-of-the-century Mexico, the timeless love-tragedy is visually translated into the fiery poetry of flamenco dance. Beautiful bandidas feud flamenco-style, mystical gypsies cast their hypnotic spell, all to the accompaniment of live flamenco guitar (Peter Mole), violin, singing (Pirouz Ebadypour) and narration of master storyteller and magician Gerardo Avila.
As one of Canada's elite professional flamenco dancers, Karen Pitkethly is the face of flamenco in Vancouver. She is a life-long dancer, extensively trained in ballet, contemporary and flamenco dance. Her journey as a flamenco bailora brought her to Spain, thanks to Canada Council. In 2009, the Karen Flamenco Studio opened in the heart of Vancouver, teaching more than 150 students each week.
Karen's choreography graced last summer's successful Bard on the Beach production of Much Ado About Nothing.
Tickets are $25 adults, $15 students and free for children 12 and under. Tickets are available online at www.caravanbc.com or at Gaia's Fair Trade in Gibsons, MELOmania in Roberts Creek and Strait Music in Sechelt.
On Sunday, April 10, from noon to 1:30 p.m. there will be a flamenco dance workshop with Pitkethly. To register, call 604-741-8354 or email [email protected].
