It's here again - the Gibsons Jazz Festival January fundraiser - a hot, hot warm-up with the winter salsa dance.
This year festival organizers are bringing back a past favourite, Rumba Calzada, on Sat-urday, Jan. 22, at 9 p.m. at Roberts Creek Hall.
"Rumba Calzada is guaranteed to move your feet and reach your soul," said Latin Beat Magazine, Los Angeles.
Originally formed in 1991 by Boying Geronimo and now headed by his son, Raphael Geronimo, Rumba Calzada has been a favourite with Vancouver's Latin jazz and salsa enthusiasts overthe years, and dancers on the Sunshine Coast love them.
Individually the players reflect Vancouver's cultural mosaic, sprouting from a diversity of cultural backgrounds. Rumba Calzada's take on Latin music is also reflective of its locale. The equatorial heat of their percussion-driven sound simmers with the "cool" of West Coast jazz.
It's time to heat up these cold winter nights with this annual hot salsa dance sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Jazz and Entertainment Society. Make sure to get your tickets early as this one always sells out. Tickets are $20, available at Coast Books, Coast Copy Centre and MELOmania.
