Youth column: Is Valentine’s Day overrated?

Getting high schoolers’ thoughts on Feb. 14
St. Valentine's Day, stock

Although Valentine’s Day has passed, I thought it’d be interesting to ask some high school students in Grades 11 and 12 what their thoughts are regarding Valentine’s Day. I had a variety of responses come back including:

1. “Valentine’s Day is overrated because you should appreciate the people you love every day and not feel obligated to because it’s a holiday.”

2. “Valentine’s Day is overrated mainly because not everyone gets to enjoy it and it’s kind of cringy.”

3. “It’s hated on because people assume it’s only for relationships, when really it’s about expressing and appreciating your love for everyone around you.”

4. “You should be showing your partner you love them every day, not just on Valentine’s Day.”

5. “I think it’s probably overrated because it’s projected as a holiday you can only celebrate with a significant other; however, the holiday was enjoyable as a kid because it was a way to show appreciation to your friends and family.”

6. “It’s an overrated holiday based on consumerism.”

7. “Valentine’s Day is an excuse to have a nice dinner and get gifts. It’s really whatever you make it.”

When I received these responses, I was surprised to find out how many people think Valentine’s Day is a waste of a holiday. Although some people reflected on how Valentine’s Day is a time for expressing love for everyone around you, a majority spoke out about the consumerism this holiday is known for. I hope anyone reading this had a good Feb. 14, no matter how you spent it.
