Unit 12 Halfmoon Bay, of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary - Pacific (CCGA-P), has just passed its safety audit with the resulting gold sticker being firmly affixed to the Ken Moore, the Unit's fast response vessel.

Chris Rasmussen, safety officer for the CCGA-P in Victoria, visited Unit 12 at its station in Secret Cove on Friday night, Jan. 14, to inspect the Unit's knowledge and preparedness in safety matters. Rasmussen checked out members' responses to questions in the area of safety then examined the Ken Moore and how well equipped she is to deal with safety issues around both crew and various situations existing in search and rescue on the water. The audit was a success for Unit 12 and the Ken Moore.

Last Saturday, Rasmus-sen spent his time giving a course to members of the Unit and also completed an on-the-water evaluation of a member who is on his way to becoming a coxswain - parlance for skipper or captain in the CCGA. The Unit greatly appreciated his visit and the members are looking forward to more in the future.

If you are interested in good comradeship, stimulating training sessions, adding to life skills, being there to help others, and don't mind the thought of being at the helm of a high-powered, very fast boat, then contact CCGA-P Unit 12 Halfmoon Bay and we'll show you around. You can make contact with the Unit at 604-885-5746.

Unit 61

Unit 61 (Pender Harbour) successfully completed its safety audit on Saturday. The Unit received particular commendation for the state of readiness of the crew and the fast response craft Iona C.

Pender Harbour's rescue vessel is one of the most extensively equipped in the auxiliary fleet, and Unit 61 is especially pleased with the recent acquisition of a FLIR thermal imaging camera, a device that will greatly assist in search operations and the rescue of persons in the water, particularly in inclement conditions.

Unit 61 is made up of volunteers who devote their time and expertise in all weather and in all conditions to the saving of lives and the rescue of vessels at sea. To learn more about them and how to join, visit CCGA61.com or call 604-989-2812.
