Celebrate Earth Hour in Sechelt at a free family-friendly community event on Saturday, March 26 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at civic square.

The Sunshine Coast Conservation Association and the District of Sechelt are co-sponsoring the event.

Be there at 7:30 p.m. to enjoy the displays and gather for the children's lantern procession led by stilt walkers "Upper Realms." There'll be eco displays, an astronomy booth with telescopes and astro giveaways, music, dance, and more. Free refreshments will be provided, so make sure to bring your own cup and help us make this a low/zero waste event.

At 8:30 p.m. Mayor Darren Inkster is scheduled to 'switch off' exterior lighting at the site for one hour, to mark the District's participation in Earth Hour.

"All residents are welcome at the event," said Inkster. "If you cannot attend, you are encouraged to turn off all unnecessary exterior lighting at your home during Earth Hour to show that you are willing to take action to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Residents are also encouraged to visit www.wwf.ca, to register their participation in Earth Hour activities and to learn more about what individuals can do to take a stand against climate change."

Since its inception in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to be the largest global sustainability movement in history. All you have to do is switch off your lights for one hour to pledge your support for the planet and promote conservation. Earth Hour will continue to be a call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world - a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the global journey to a sustainable future.

Families are also reminded that on Thursday, March 24 from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a free lantern making workshop for children ages four to 10 at the community use room across from Sechelt Public Library, led by Sandy Buck from Deer Crossing at the Art Farm. This workshop will help participants get their lanterns ready for Earth Hour activities. Call Connie Jordison at 604-885-1986 to register or email [email protected].
